Ok, it is that time a year again to announce the annual Camp n Fly! It will be May 3-4th 2025! Be there or be square!
You can make camping reservations at https://reservecalifornia.com/Web/ search Sunset SB.
There will be the usual Saturday night potlick BBQ, please bring some pre-cooked food to pitch in! This has always been a hit.
🙂

Shirts/hoodies will be announced when we get the design out and ready.
See you all there!

It would appear they are having issues with their website.

I am attempting to reserve the group site. The site would not let you reserve, so I called and all was going pretty good until they could not accept CC payment so, waiting for a call back.

We should be getting the Group Camping site. What does his mean? A new main camp at the event! Some photos:

This gives us space for 10 vehicles and 50 people. We should be OK with trailers also according to what we were told in the past. Nice big campfires, lots of tables, running water and some pit pot toilets too.

We would love to have a bunch of you stay at this camp. It is a little longer walk to the glider port, but there is a nice trail. I think this will be a really nice location for main camp.

If you would like to camp at the group site, please email me (wayne@alofthobbies.com) and let me know what nights (we start Wednesday) and include a cell phone just in case we need it closer to the event. Will figure out costs once we have everyone in there, but plan for $30/night, they also get you for $10 a vehicle at the gate.

quick update - Their website has been having issues. They have a team looking into it. If you are not able to book, give them a call at 1-800-444-7275. They had an issue with taking credit cards, but eventually got that working.

The group site has been served, and you are welcome to stay there. This will be the main site for the event, see photos above. Just drop me a message if you would like to stay in the group camp, and what nights.

Since you moved to the group site and I am not sure if the trailer would fit, I reserved your normal site. I'll check out the group site and probably move over there next year.

Ok now who is bringing a golf cart and trailer?

OH YES! I'll be there and excited to do this event again. I've already made my reservation at the South Camp site and just learned now that a group site might be available. South Camp is filling fast. Having a group site would be great for the rest of the flyers who will need to make a reservation.

So here is the scoop on the Group Campground. Good news is that the winds yesterday, Saturday were 20 - 25mph at Sunset; Sunday, today, Davenport was ~25+ by early afternoon.

Parking. Talked to one of the kiosk attendant that has been there for a few years (rangers nowhere to be found) He said they do not allow trailer parking in the group parking area. When I measure the main parking pad it's only ~20 - 22 feet wide, from the buried posts to the hard top, and ~130 feet long. So probably 10 cars. Not wide enough for anything but maye a sleep in van. East of the bathrooms (3 porta potties) there is another possible parking for about 6 - 8 cars. The guy at the kiosk also said they have 2 overflow parking areas that we can use for extra cars. Plenty of room for many tents; About 5 or 6 big tables; BBQ, fresh water; fire pit.

Here is a short vid and pictures of the parking area.

Part 2 of the S.OS. (Save Our Sunset!)

Walkway going up. Well trimmed sides - I'm sure that stuff will overgrow during the winter. The two planks that have been flexing at the bottom of the access walk really need to be reinforced. IT will take 4 x 4 and 2 x 4 with LOOOONG lug bolts.

""New table" that was placed there by one of the local pilots (sorry don't remember who) 2 or 3 years ago, will not live thru this winter unless it's reinforced. It will take a few 2 x 4's and long wood screws but it needs to be done pretty much now.

"Old Table" only the top of the table remains down the hill at the south end of the flying area. The planks are nice and solid. The top is 6'4" long x 2'4" wide. Everything else will need to be build/rebuild; Will mostly need 4 x 4's and long lug bolts - current top planks are about 3" thick x 6" wide and the cross supports are 4 x 4 but need to be replaced. No seat boards around

'Front fence' - not much has changed, falling apart but still there. The south end of it will have to be repaired/replaced or just removed to make that end save for people to walk thru..

Thanks for the report! Might be worth organizing a "Camp n Work" weekend prior?
