Sunset State Beach Camp & Fly May 6-7th 2023!!!!!!

@Wayne We were on the other side of the potluck and didnt hear the Los Banos info you were talking about. Can you share again what you were saying about that event?
Basically we can fly anything there, glider or powered. When the slope is working in prime conditions it is amazing with huge lift everywhere, tons of airspace to spread out. Probably a mile or so of slope to pick your spot. As a result it is not as tight knit at Sunset. But the risk of a mid air drops to near zero. Landings are super easy. So huge planes and fancy planes are more the norm at this site. Big scale models, aero towing, are all popular here. With this said, even tiny floaters are still a ton of fun here.

If conditions are not ideal, then a single slope face may bunch people up, and it gets a little more like Sunset. If the wind is not there at all, then we can switch to thermal flying and aero towing.

Camping is not the same. No tents allowed, fully contained vehicles only. You are locked in at night. Most people hotel it in town and group up for breakfast and dinner at local restaurants.

So it is a very different experience. Would be a great site for your big scale glider.

Sounds like some group fpv flying would be fun too. If conditions are right it would be nice to have a designated combat zone. Go somewhere else with nice planes.

When the wind hits well like it did on Sunday of the last event, everyone spreads out naturally and flies their favorites. It is more about you and your planes at Banos.

Again this really depends on what the slope gives to us at any given time. Sunset is very consistent. In 9 years of going there I have never been skunked. Los Banos does not have that same track record. My ratio there is right at 50% currently. So yes, powered FPV flights might be a lot of fun there should the lift be down.

@Diceman I used to do all the flight controller stuff but now i just go straight frsky 900mhz receiver and dji video. I should be good for way farther than i will ever fly so i just dont worry about return to home or gps stuff. I just keep an eye on battery cells or set a timer of my phone before i launch. The dji video link will start getting pixelated and you can see the bitrate numbers so you know when you are getting out of range of the video. 5.8 fat shark stuff is similar you will start getting snow and know you probably shouldnt go any farther or you need to get some altitude to clear your Fresnel zone.

Just see you all know tuna survived and he'll be hanging in a place of honor on my wall until next sunset or whatever event we go flying at lol

"sunset 2023 planes"
the airplane survey shows also a very interesting airplane , the Continuum, a box wing model.
very cool to see in the air !
Reminds me of the Ligeti Stratos

Thanks Nathan.
Any links/recommendations for the goggles? Do they come with all I need less the receiver/battery? Thanks!
You got to buy the goggles and that comes with a battery and everything for it and then you have to pick up a receiver unit or transmitter I guess and that comes with the camera usually. I can link you to it if you ever decide you want to get into it. HD is amazing
