Camp n Fly 2024 May 4-5th!

Its a huge site, cant wait for may!
It is an additional walk, but should be nice for lots of us all to be in one area to hang out.
It also will allow us to not have to worry about non event camping people when we stay up late for potluck saturday night.

We will need to make some calls to confirm the trailer will be OK, but when we checked in the past they were fine with that, and they generally made it sound like they were very happy with us and would allow some of the vehicle limits to be a bit more flexible at the Group Site. As it is they have been very flexible even at the normal campsites as long as it did not impact other campers. But I find it best to always touch base with current staff as folks move around in their jobs.

I'm suggesting a even split of the cost amongst the folks staying at the group site. Get enough folks in tere and it should be pretty cheap, probably cheaper than the normal sites.

I can reserve the site and pay upfront.
So be clear it is not currently booked and available? I am confused by your initial post when you said it was already booked? If so I need to make a decision lol

Would be nice to have a golf cart or something for transport lol

I think that they were saying that they were considering it last year but it was booked and they couldn't grab it.

I guess the question would be how many people can fit there. How many campers, tents, and cars? I know that it was stated that there was a 10 car max but that this wasn't impossible to add a little more. If we were to add up all of the Camp and Fly people who came last year we'd exceed capacity so there will be others who would be camping at their own site. The last question would be how much further is the walk to where we fly? I can look at a map and check that out in a bit. It was super convenient last year but the extra walk wouldn't be too bad I'm sure.

Personally, I didn't see any flaws in our set-up last year and we were super close to the flying site, and we effectively had that entire site filled with people who were flying, but I also see the perks of this group site as that grill is perfect for bigger dinners and there's a bunch of tables. I'm open to exploring the options. There's pros and cons to both.

Personally I don't think there is enough room for parking cars AND camper/trailers/Vans (to sleep in) in the group camping. If you were in a tent last year and go into with group parking now that would work, but is @Wayne going to get 10 people for Wed, Thursday and Friday night to get his money back? Saturday, probably no problem. Earlier in the week I hope so but most don't commit until spots are mostly gone.

Personally I do have a camper that I sleep in and already have a site.

50? How many vehicle's are allowed to park there? I think with 50 people, there would have to be several huge tents to fit mutiple people to sleep vs 50 or even 40 tents? I am defintely in, but just saying. I know there is a bigger area behind the pinic benches under the trees for tents, I just never really gave it a good look

50 people
10 cars - included in reservation cost
18' pad length

I'm not sure what the rules are but if you look on some of the Aerials you can see tents kind of dotted everywhere in this area.
You can compare that to the tiny little sites we normally get at the bottom

Think of all the planes we can spread out.

Site stated up to 31 foot trailer. Other pages say tent only. But I know they told us in the past that a tent is fine.

@Wayne

Sunset State campground max trailer length is 31 feet (most sites are much smaller). The pad length at the group site is 18' - if you park a trailer across a few parking spots you might be able to park

In the past I just stuck the back of my trailer over the log they have in the back. Never had any issues with the staff there. Not sure the group site even has logs.

@Wayne
If it does not rain too much this weekend I will be staying at Sunset and I will try to measure the space. Any requests on other stuff to check out?

Always good to see if the glider port is in need of any repairs. Might not hurt to talk with the rangers and let them know we are returning in May and happy to help out where and how possible, can do a repairs day prior to the event. They always turn us down, but you never know. And if you can ask the folks in the booth if a trailer or two in the group site will be OK.

I also hope to visit Sunset one of these days pretty soon. I'd run out to visit with you this weekend, but the local power club is moving to a new field and volunteered to lend a hand ripping out the old runway.

The land at Liberty Field was sold, going to be a new equestrian center.. shocker. (Those that don't know, it is hard to crash a plane around here without hitting an equestrian center.) Luckily the club was able to secure a new spot super fast, it is pretty close to Aloft, just in the other direction from the old field. This new field looks like a better location to me. (We checked it out at Lunch today.)

They do have some work to get it built up and ready for winter rains. They are trying to get it done ASAP.

The Santa Rosa club also lost their flying site, one month prior. I have not heard an update on their hunt for a new location.
