Los Banos build thread for everyone

so far we tried up to 100" wingspan.

BTW , I have about 1200 W of power on the propeller shaft.
I can look at references for guidelines on the expected possibilities of this setup.

We could try a dry run at Baylands if you wish.

according to one of the references by : IFlyTailies, aka Alex, aka Schleppmeister
  • Rule of thumb: at least 100W/pound (sailplane and tow plane weight combined!).
  • This applies for electric, gas, or glow power.
  • Tows with 70-90W/pound are possible, but require experienced tow an sailplane pilots
so, if the tow plane takes 6 pounds, we have 6 pounds left for the glider

As some of you might have noticed, James Hammond has sent me the first prototype of the Spada. This is what he calls a 3M go fast all arounder. Flight test and evaluation (among many other things) are what I do for my day job so this is right up my alley. I’m grateful to Doc for the opportunity to give my unbiased opinion during assembly and after wringing it out. I dig the custom color scheme! It is due to me tomorrow (thanks to Wayne and crew for the quick turn) and I’ll get started on it right away.

Ryan’s Danwing foamy combat plane is nearly done, pics coming soon on that.

I’ve started on my 2M Scythe. Im waiting for wing servos but in the mean time I’ve got the elevator servo in, linkage done and RX mounted. I need to put in the magnet switch then the fuse is basically done. The wing should fall together as it already has Tomas Liu LDS and frames installed. This plane is capable of well over 300 mph ( I have an E fuse too) and should be in the 400 range for DS. Looking forward to this one.

More soon!

@SailHigh any ideas on a short notice for some 'tugs"?

@agarchitect You could always ask local farmers to help:
I don't know of any large tow planes coming to this gathering as it's advertised as a slope event. They tend to attend Scale Aerotowing events like Visalia, and hopefully we'll have our annual aerotow event next Spring at Los Banos again after the Covid hiatus. Another thing to note is the diminishing number of large towplanes over the last few years as most newer scale sailpanes are now self powered.

Ryan’s Danwing is done, just need some graphics after the fins are cured. He said Aston Martin but I’m thinking John Deere lol

The Spada has arrived as well, so I’ll get started on that. First impressions are the quality, fit and finish are outstanding. It came with a nice hardware kit, including all the linkage of you wished to do traditional external linkage and a nice wiring harness with Graupner style plugs.

The Scythe is now done as well save for CG and final programming. I used the 1.5M DLG harness from Aloft. I had to add a 6” extension for the ailerons, but the flaps reached fine. I’m impressed with these, especially for the price. Nice 22AWG (maybe 20) wire and Graupner style gang connectors all soldered up and ready to go. Amazing value and I don’t have to build it!

This plane came with Tomas Liu LDS frames installed to fit Cha servos. This is the first time I’ve used them, first impressions are favorable.

Woo...that will be a whizzer...going to make a nice noise with those wingtips once it gets its head down!

Sssssssssuper!

What are you going to do to relax, Red?

Doc.

Two rehabs finished. Now we will see how I did in Banos. 4.5m Valenta SB9, 2.6m MPX Pilatus B4. It might be a T-tail weekend for us. Hope to get a couple other ones ready..
Nice! Is that the Pilatus you got from me? Looking forward to seeing it go.

dg808 is pretty much done. I need to put it all together and finalize cg location with the electronics.
So started finishing the A4.

BNSF has brought this up 2 sunset's ago and my plan was to recover it. But for time i just reshrunk it at like 300c. Not perfect but it did tighten it up and restuck it down. Seems like it was already hitting cg and has some vecro to put a battery on cg, so pretty easy setup.

Only issue im having is with my rx. I have 2 more so i will probably try another one.
Its acting like its getting washed out by too much radio, like its too close. So i put it into range mode and it was still doing the same thing. connect, disconnect, connect. And in the second or two of connection the servo movements are very jerky. Tried different battery and no servos. Maybe i damaged it soldering.
