Los Banos build thread for everyone!

With Sunset being a wrap I of course need to build more planes for Los Banos in October. I also have other projects (Impulse) that need my attention, but I can sneak in a few slopers too.

First up @JLink125 and I along with another friend are putting together some Gulp’s. Mine is a DS, Links is an SR. Bought them for DS but they’ll be fun at Banos too.

Also on the bench is my 100” Ridge Runner refurb. Built in 1975 by Gary Hover for my friend Len Ledson. I used to own it back in the day but never flew it. It got away from me but thankfully found its way back. New radio gear and a clean up and it should be ready to go.

What else? Lots to choose from. 100” VTPR scratch build, Tucano PSS, Micro SR, all molded Me-163, and a couple new designs for @Wayne to kit.

What’s on your workbench?

Do we have dates yet?

Ill try and get my 4.5m dg808 ready.

Sounds like having powered stuff ready to go is a good idea for bad wind days as well so ill probably get my fpv planes ready and make sure the batteries are still good.

Really liked the Bam Bams. They flew very nicely and recovered instantly except the time someone took off my fin. Didn't know coroplast could shatter. (a good hit)
Going into production for sure!

lol Bam Bam, yes thats what i typed.
I remember you talking about using a larger vertical. Did that make a noticeable difference?

Yes, I first tested with the little one, it was bad. Then switched to the larger ones. It was almost like I expected the little ones to suck.. LOL Had to try a smaller tail to confirm some thoughts in my head.

We are going to try my very best to come to this one - and not get involved in pesky Marine engine refurbish projects!

Here is a humble suggestion - you can spank me if I'm wrong (and Julia is not around).

I saw loads of videos of Sunset this year featuring over a million foamies dashing and dodging around and it looked like a total blast. But I didn't see too much film of the bigger or mouldie models that I'm sure were there.

Soooo...I was wondering maybe it might be a good idea to put in just a little bit of flying organization, and reserve a couple of times when the foamies stayed on the deck and bigger or mouldie stuff could be flown without trusting the force and going through the foam Ort cloud?

Just a thought.

Anyway! As I said we are going to try hard to make it.

New ones: If we do manage to make it, we will have: a 4M Alpenbrise, and a 3M Spada for sure, MAYBE a 2M Typhoon Toccata. By that time MAYBE there will be a couple more test flyers too.

Dayum I'm getting excited even now.

Doc and Julia.

I heard no complaints about the flying from anyone even those that took damage. What you may not have seen is that there were a few composites flown, but not typically when a mass of combat wings were in the sky.

We have discussed flying times for other types in the past and it was shot down. Slope pilots don't like rules or schedules.

Now that we have a few other events on the calendar I'm actually comfortable with letting Sunset be a mostly foam event. Los Banos is for sure a better site for the big composite planes! I'm hoping that Ortega might be added to our calendar in the coming 12 months and that will also favor larger models. (You really do not want to hike the slope at Ortega or Banos for a downed glider.)

Should people want to have some breaks from the foam at Sunset, please add your voice here.

@Doc J There were a few, bigger, molded planes. @Diceman flew his 2m RPM, Alex flew an old 3m F3f/F3B plane called the 'Blitz' (late 80's early '90), but overall the conditions I think favored the foam (both weather and flying patterns) Los Banos will be better, just don't forget to bring a a plane with a winch in the nose just in-case!

I wouldn’t mind having a set time for composite “crunchies” although it may beg the question ( are we just flying through carbon and glass now instead of foam?) It’s honestly not that critical to me, I had plenty of space to jam with my composite planes even with all the foam. Would I have liked to get close to the lip and rip some turns sure but sharing is cool too. I really like the relaxed atmosphere Wayne, either way it was a blast and I can’t wait to meet up again!

Yep, that's the issue, flight pattern! Sunset has evolved to being really suitable for low emotional investment ships, fun but something one is willing to lose. But who wants to be the flight director! Wayne said something in the order of, with slope pilots it is like hearding cats.

I hope Los Banos will be a venue to show both craftsmanship and flying skill.

Sound like formation flying challenge - bring you PSS lead sleds! I will recover my wings to show off new colors, but I will also bring our scale glider just in case!

Formation flying might be a good use of foam.:eek:
