X18 vs X20?

I am still interested in upgrading my transmitter from the old Ace MP8000 and am interested in the Frsky products. What are the main differences between X18 and X20 and which would be a better Sailplane radio.? Thank you for any feedback.

Mainly ergonomics, the 18 is smaller. I have the 20 but can't give you a "feel" comparison as I have never held the 18. There is a thread here: https://forum.alofthobbies.com/index.php?threads/x18-vs-x20s.3003/#post-40984 that discusses it as well.
Either would be awesome for gliders.

Having flown both, I went for a blue x18s as it has the two trimmers on the front which are very useful. The ergonomics are great.

Both radios have the same functionality the main difference is the screen size.

The FRsky web site says . Compatible with ACCST Receivers with D16 V2 or later FW

I am pretty sure the D4R and D8RII receivers will not work as you can't get the 2.1.1 protocol for them. I bought a iRangeX IRX4 Lite Multi Protocol Module for my x20 and I have used that on an XMR (https://www.frsky-rc.com/product/xmr/) that can't be updated.

You will need to add one of these to the back of the X18 or X20 radios to work with your existing D8 receivers.

If you like a challenge you can install a special version of UNI-RX onto the older receivers and bring them up to ACCST spec, then no module needed. This is not a super easy process, best for the people who know their way around a computer.
