What are you doing to fight the FAA's proposed Remote ID?

Having read through much of what Scott sent me a week or so ago I was rather disturbed about the FAA's total approach. With over 20 years holding an A&P and being an IA for a number of them, I know what is being proposed in legal ease. If you read a Federal Aviation Regulation without reading part 1 of that reg you will not know the scope and intent. It will not be repeated in any other part of that reg. Be sure to look up the definitions. There are very few gray areas. That said, having to purchase a serialized aircraft (look that one up) within 3 years means Type Certificates. This is the end of scratch building, small manufacturers, and huge price increases in what will be available. Big insurance will be involved. The hobby will die. The idea that some company would just land a drone carrying a 90lb package anywhere they choose to deliver it is about as irresponsible as it gets. Obviously the general public is out of the loop. Please join me in not only writing the FAA but your Local Congress and Senate. Thx

I am sure of one thing in all of this. I am proud to be an Airman. In my career I have always guarded life. 9.5 years with Continental Airlines doing Heavy check B727,737,747, MD80 series. 7 years Logging Helicopters H43 Husky (16700 hours) UH1 B/C, K1200 KMAX . This is the most dangerous environment other than combat. I never ever lost anyone. All FAA regs are written in blood. The idea it’s going to be somebody’s kid playing in the driveway to change this makes me sick. Do you really think these uncertified people in charge of producing these drones or only want to make money will respect this?

It gets better all the time. The next FAA brain storm is 84 FR 3856 This NPRM summery is below. (It's scheduled for publication on Feb 13 so comments are not yet being accepted).

The FAA proposes to amend its rules applicable to the operation of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This rulemaking would allow operations of small unmanned aircraft over people in certain conditions and operations of small UAS at night without obtaining a waiver. It would also require remote pilots in command to present their remote pilot in command certificate as well as identification to certain Federal, State, or local officials, upon request, and proposes to amend the knowledge testing requirements in the rules that apply to small UAS operations to require training every 24 calendar months. This proposal would be the next phase in integrating small UAS using a risk-based approach. These amendments would allow expanded small UAS operations and reduce the knowledge testing burden on remote pilot in command certificate holders.
 
Have a look at AC133-1B. External Load Operations. Look at the restrictions and definitions of suspended loads. See the requirements for site analysis, and ground personnel. Even with all this in place it is still risky. Despite certified equipment, the best maintenance, it will occasionally fault and drop a load. I had an issue with a belly hook once that between a chaffed control wire and a bad airframe ground, static build up would trip the release.
Another flight operation into a congested areas is Medevac helicopters. Look at the safety record. Not that great. It is an acceptable practice because of they are saving life. They still require someone on the ground directing them in. There is a pilot aboard with a situational awareness that cannot be duplicated with AI or FPV. I know it is easy to get myopic to just look at this from the RC hobby perspective but this in truth affects everyone.

One thing is sure, WE NEED ALLIES. Has anyone contacted PAMA, ALPA, the USPA? I know some of you are Aeronautical Engineers. You must have similar organizations who represent you. This is about preserving not only the AMA community but what our full size profession always stood for. Safe Free Skies! Our RC flying fields should at most be a NOTAM. Notice to Airmen. Are they going to shut down every Skydiving operation? I doubt it. At best Drones should be nothing more than another good neighbor sharing airspace if they can prove to be safe. That’s a big one. (AI autorotation, ballistic parachute?) Let me be very clear. The airspace is being cleared NOT FOR HOBBY SIZED DRONES. HOW BIG TO CARRY 90LBS! How about your midsized motorcycle falling out of the sky on to your house after being hit by lightning? To try to do a blanket program unlike every other new neighbor before them just shows how arrogant these people are. The undermanned FSDO’s are to unable to cope the number of site by site approvals this should require to handle an invasion like this. And make no mistake, the way this is being handled it is exactly that. Help me help you.

I wrote my letter a while ago..

But I am also going to attend this tomorrow evening. We all should attend to talk to our area AMA rep. He will not like what we will have to say. You do NOT have to be a SBSS member to attend. Anyone and everyone is invited.

 
Jeremy - I will not be able to attend that meeting tonight. Was until I remembered I had a PT appointment. Be a LONG traffic filled drive anyhow. Please share what you find! Keep in mind that I'm pretty sure the rep is an unpaid AMA position.
 
I'm planning to attend the local EAA chapter meeting tomorrow night. Then I'm thinking about walking a written comment into my local FSDO, since the demonstration in DC on the 29th is on the other side of the country.

I finally wrote my senators and congressional rep. Replies I've seen from others around the country have demonstrated that either the letters were not read, not understood, or the representatives are just plain stupid. It appears that in general the reps don't have a clue what a recreational model aircraft is. They seem to think they are capable of carrying people - either that or they didn't have an appropriate boilerplate reply so they simply sent their reply to those that wrote regarding the Boeing 737max debacle. Anyway -- I finally decided on an approach to try to bait them into at least looking into the matter. Who knows if it will work. Attached is my letter to my elected reps.

Maybe my grandson with the simulator - the youngest of the three pilots in the 5th generation of aviation enthusiasts in my family.

Hi all, I am not a US citizen nor live in the US but just across the border in Canada,I'm not sure what kind of input I can have that will help you all, I do know if this proposal does become Law your government will be applying heavy pressure on mine to follow suit.
Already in the UK the same kind or similar legislation is being proposed and finalized, this is far reaching and I hope you can find a resolution that satisfies all parties,I believe the economic repercussions from this legislation will reach far beyond the shores of North America and I hope that cooler heads will prevail and not enact this draconian proposal..

As far as I know you can leave comments with the FAA also. :)

Even if other governments don't follow the FAA, it will still have a large impact on the hobby asI do think it will alter future products and current manufacturing.
 
I know for myself I am very much up in the air about the future of our business and how we might proceed should this actually become law. I suspect Aloft would no longer be a hobby shop, we would be forced to sell non-aviation products to keep our doors open. I hope I do not live to see that day.

Wayne, I hope you can get the gist of my proactive approach. I realize it's difficult to comprehend, but in theory, I know it's feasible.
