USB Enumeration

I've been successfully using (and LOVING) my FrSky X20 and Ethos. That said, the Windows laptop that I was using for Ethos died, so I have been trying to get everything set up and running on my Macbook Air. I can get the X20 to acknowledge that it is connected to USB, but the two folders of files from the radio will not show up on the desktop. I've been working with ChatGPT, and have tried on both my old Mac Pro (Trashcan) and on my Windows 11 tower. Here's the summary of my efforts that ChatGPT created.

"The radio correctly detects USB insertion and enters USB Connected and Ethos Suite modes. Three different host computers (Apple Silicon Mac, Intel Mac, Windows 11) never enumerate the device. Windows pnputil shows no new USB device whatsoever. Multiple known-good USB data cables have been tested."

ChatGPT thinks that perhaps something in the internal USB hardware in the transmitter has failed. I'd really appreciate any input....

I doubt it.

I have used a number of different AI for different projects. Some artwork, some technical, some programming and of course some simple and quick answers I'm seeking. I have learned one thing, it is about as accurate as a gifted 12 year old child. Sometimes it will amaze you, but more often it will just give a junky generic answer. Worse yet and very commonly it gives wrong answers or VERY flawed.

If you have expertise in some area, ask AI some questions in your expertise and see what it comes up with. It is entertaining.


OK - Solution - I prefer to use a PC for updates with Ethos. Prior to Ethos I prefered to use a MAC with OpenTX. I find the PC just seems to be more reliable with Ethos Suite. That and the MAC can and will write a bunch of MAC OS files onto any volume that loads up on a MAC.

If you like, you can send the radio to us and we can perform whatever updating you would like. We do charge a small fee for this, but if we encounter and issue, then you will know it was something to do with your radio. Ethos Suite is pretty darn good, but like almost all apps out there, drivers and other installed software on the host computer can be a real problem.

I suspect there are issues with drivers , you may want to try using these utilities:

zadig should not be needed for any current Frsky gear, and it is only for the PC.

On the transmitter, try setting Sys -> General -> USB mode preselection to "Ethos Suite" then plugin USB while powered on.

This works for me on a Mac Studio with an X14S.

Edit: for actually using Ethos Suite I just put it into bootloader mode or whatever the instructions say to do when Ethos Suite comes up and it works OK, even with USB mode preselection set to Joystick.

Edit 2: also try a different cable.

Thanks Wayne... I just ordered a good quality USB A to USB C cable, just to be sure. If that doesn't make Ethos recognize the X-20, I will get back to you about sending the radio to you. Thanks again for the quick reply!

I have used my MacBook Pro since day 1, even before Ethos Suite was released with my X20s. I tend to power my X20s on in boot loader mode before connecting it to my laptop.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Apparently, I have the world's largest collection of crappy USB cables. When I finally got my grubby mitts on a USB A to USB C cable, all of the weirdness went away. I will say that I think it is strange that the X20 can say that it has a USB connection, and still not read the files in the two folders. Anyway, I am back in business, at least with Ethos Suite installed on my Windows 11 tower. It will be more convenient to use my Macbook Air, if I can get similar results with it. Thanks again!
