Unable to register Taranis RX6R with Taranis X9D plus 2019 (both new as of March 18, 2020) Suggestions?

I just "discovered" that this Forum allows one to EDIT or even DELETE a post after it is posted. That is a convenient feature. On the bottom of my posts I see choices that are in a very light font and I had ignored them till now as they looked to be "grey'ed out".

I also find that I can export an entire thread should I want to print or archive it. The "export as *.pdf" feature in Safari (iOS) worked for me. I can now go through a thread copied as a *.PDF and highlight comments that relate directly to a particular story line. This will make it easier to consolidate all the advice and be more focused.

These are convenient features. I will notice to see if the date of an edited post changes.

(EDIT)..... the date in the upper left does not change but an edited time does appear in the lower right corner of a post. I like this feature.
(another EDIT) Hmmm. The date on this post did change but an EDIT on an earlier post did not. Maybe the date is frozen once someone else looks at a post. Till then it looks like the date is assigned to be at my last edit.

I am now curious about the "report" button at the bottom of posts. I am reluctant to experiment as I do not want to report something as inappropriate, if that is what "report" does. Someone might not think that is funny, particularly if the post is legitimate.

There is also a string of editing functions along the top bar of the post window. Let's see if the color text feature works.

Those are all standard forum features. Typically the Edited date only appears if you edit later than a few minutes after initial posting.

Report is indeed to report inappropriate content to moderators.

We picked this software as we really like the features and ease of use. I like powerful but easy. :)

I agree that the Forum software was a good choice. It was done thoughtfully. I have been exploring how it operates.

My observation is a bit different from yours. I find that "powerful" is not usually "easy". I like this expression of this idea:
"Good. Fast. Cheap. Pick two. "

It was on the wall of the photo lab of a company I worked at years ago. Most decisions actually involve many factors not just a consideration of only two.

I am almost ready to take the first update step. I will get to a video that describes the process but first, one more thing.

I have four items that I want to update, the OpenTX version on the Tx, the internal module, flash ACCESS on the receiver, and probably the SD card (the OpenTX site shows a newer version for the SD card).

Is the order that I perform these updates an issue? I am planning on flashing the receiver first as I have a spare if something goes haywire.

The video link below has a procedure for the Taranis x9d plus ACCESS described. There is a momentary view of my transmitter model at 3:01 in the video. The connection pin-out in the battery bay can be seen silkscreened on the edge of the printed circuit board by the S Port pins. It is hard to see but a magnifier and a bright light make it easier. I would also direct attention to the posts above "Thursday, 9.41 PM" and the following post where the use of the harness supplied with the receiver is discussed.

( Aloft Tech Talks has four videos that may also be useful. The above reference is one of the four. I am still waiting for the paper manual.)

Is there anything else I need to do before proceeding?

Yes you need to save any models you have created on your radio. Use Opentx to save using the second icom on the left hand side. Do you have any custom audio files on your SD card, need to save those as well.

Just to be clear. Copying new files to the SD card is a simple copy function. Once the copying process is complete I always make a back copy somewhere and date it. The Aloft video shows the receivers files that were current at the time the video was made. So much later versions may now be on the FRsky website.

Thanks HENNY,

At this point I have only one model file and it is only a placeholder. The TX is otherwise factory fresh and hopefully I have not made any questionable settings as I explored the Tx with radio's screen (buttons and wheel), Companion (2.3..9), and my laptop (iOS). I have updated using the supplied SD card and made a failsafe setting, NO PULSE as I recall and no longer get any warnings when I turn on the Tx. Previously I was getting both warnings and maybe no sound (not sure) until I updated with the SD card. Now she talks a bit, beeps and does not show warnings.

When I look into the Tx ( finder function and USB connection acknowledged by Tx, green backlighting ) I find two external drives, Taranis and "NO NAME". NO NAME is the pre-loaded SD card I obtained from Aloft Hobbies. Taranis is more interesting and contains three items:

EEPROM.BIN
FIRMWARE.BIN
FIRMWARE.TXT

I have not figured out how to examine the *.BIN files but the .TXT file content is posted below.

OpenTX Bootloader for x9d+2019

BOOTVER opentx-x9d+2019-2.3.0 (2c018e71)
DATE 2019-09-05
TIME 08:55:07
req SD ver 2.3V0020
FWVERSION opentx-x9d+2019-2.3.7 (8b080683)

NO NAME currently has this directory structure installed and it is as delivered by Aloft Hobbies I have a copy of the "as delivered" SD as a backup that I made before even installing the SD card in the Tx.

The sub-directories in the SD card are labeled as follows:

EEPROM
FIRMWARE
IMAGES
LOGS
MODELS
opentx.sdcard.version
SCREENSHOTS
SCRIPTS
SOUNDS
SxR Calibrate

The subdirectories are mostly empty except for brief README.TXT files describing the subdirectory use. Sounds has a bunch of sound files but I have not tried to add anything. It looks like the Tx may be able to speak in multiple languages.

As you suggest I will backup both Taranis and NO NAME. Now a question, It is my understanding that the Tx will need updates in two locations, the OpenTX and the internal module. Do those locations correspond to the FIRMWARE.BIN and EEPROM.BIN files? I take it that I should not try to load/flash them directly and rather update them using the Transmitter to "flash" each after I have copied (simple COPY) the updated firmware in the SD card (maybe in the FIRMWARE and EEPROM subdirectories but I am not sure of that yet).

The video I cited above says to use the FIRMWARE subdirectory and the downloaded RX6R_ACCESS_2.1.0.frsk. I believe that this is the most recent firmware and I am intending to connect the Rx and "flash the S-port" using this file.

I think I am ready to flash the receiver. Do you agree?

After that works I will go after updating OpenTX and the internal module. One step at a time. The update firmware I found, and from where, is in my Aug 26 post (the bigger one). I have several more, hopefully minor questions on that but let's see how the receiver flash goes.

The Aloft video is 10 months old and I did not find anything newer. They momentarily showed a picture of what looks line my exact Tx (3.01 into the video) so I am think is is the best I can find. I looked around a bit more before I posted it here.

It is taking a while to backup the SD card, about 7 minutes.

Regards and thanks for your patient assistance. By the way, if this goes astray it is my fault not yours.

Comments #12 and vicinity on this thread are not exactly applicable here (ACCST vs ACCESS) but are close enough to be mentioned.

Taranis x9d plus 2019 power switch backlight color code?

I would update you TX first as this is the primary control device.

I understand your concern in updating a brand new RX and TX but once you have completed it once its actually pretty easy.

Best to remove the SD card and load files using your computer. The baud rate between the TX and computer is quite slow.

Re charging your TX you can use a standard Samsung phone charger but the charger get pretty hot I use this one available on

Ebay. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8-Port-...&brand=Samsung&_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985

Check your Lipo charger - many have a USB output to charge phones etc. (my Hitec RDX1 does).
But my QX7 also charges up fairly quickly when plugged into my laptop.

OK. I will reverse the order of procession. I am reasonably confident that flashing the receiver is now ready to go anyway. I am also certain that messing with the *.BIN files in the TARANIS folder (on the transmitter) is a bad idea.

The downloads for OpenTx and the internal module were folders each with several files inside. Should I put the folders on the SD card and should they go in the FIRMWARE and EEPROM subfolders or does everything go into the FIRMWARE subfolder on the SD card (NO NAME, From Aloft).

Or do I fish around in the folders downloaded for the file that looks appropriate and just load that to the SD card? FIRMWARE subfolder or does the OpenTX (*.bin and *.dfu) go one place and with the module update (ISAM 2.1 something; *.frsk and *.txt)) going elsewhere. I can easily move files around, I just do not yet understand just what to move where.

The magic paper manual is now in the mail and due tomorrow.

I actually charged the transmitter battery through the USB connection to the laptop. It looks like it does not take too long but then the battery was probably pretty full still. My preference is to not use the laptop as a battery charger and I have an extra Apple sourced wall wart and I will try that next time. It sounds like anything with a USB socket will work just fine.

For now, is it appropriate to think of the SD card as temporary storage and once I have flashed files/firmware to the right place, it no longer is significant? Maybe only the model setup files are there? The SETUP subdirectory is empty in spite of me having the beginning of one model, 01 Ahi, on the transmitter. I am curious about why OpenTX has an SD card update in the mix with the others versions. Maybe more sounds and pictures than what I got from Aloft Hobbies.

Salty Dog, oops I mean Old Salty.
You have not read my earlier posts to you.
The reason you transfer the receiver files to the SD card is so you have them available at the flying field. Of course you use your TX to flash the receiver. It is advisable to disconnect any servos connected to the receiver as the TX can only supply a enough current to power the receiver on its own, and it is possible to damage the TX

With regard to storing firmware, I create a seperate folder which I call "Flashing Firmware" so that the TX firmware and receiver firmware are in seperate folders. However you can simply put your receiver firmware in the firmware folder, it's your choice the TX doesnt care. Don't put firmware in the EEprom folder.

ACCESS has only one type of firmware file , ACCST has two types being FCC which is what you need in the USA and EU or also called LBT is for Europe so delete these. Be sure in what you are doing and don't fish around for what looks appropriate, that will get you into trouble.

Keep your receiver or other sensor files on your radio, you never know when you may need them again, maybe to help a friend out at the field by showing him how clever you are at flashing receivers?

There are some files that get updated from time to time including sound files so copy them all. Once you become comfortable you can produce your own sound files for special call outs. There is one files that is required for TX firmware upgrades it called "opentx.sdcard.version" if you have the incorrect one or an older version of this file you get a wrong firmware version warning when you turn the TX on everytime. This wont stop the radio but is a warning only. The other thing you can do is delete all the sound files except "en" (English) unless that is you can speak french. well go for it.

Get that salt rolling and start flashing, (said the actress to the bishop"

Hi HENNY,

I think I saw that the SD card is formatted FAT32 but I have not been able to find where I saw that. Is that the preferred format? My additional cards are not due till next Monday or Tuesday.

I think the rest of the comment was that 1 GB was plenty and that anything more than 32 GB caused addressing issues.

Thanks

I just found this reference. It discusses Companion which is one of the ways to keep track of what is going on with the Tx.

There are a variety of references and I am trying to figure out what is really applicable and what is extraneous.

I just flashed the receiver, it registered and then bound. Green LED lit on receiver.

I connected a few servos and guess what they wiggle around. Besides the comments here, Lothar's paper manual was a great help.

Thank you all for your assistance.

FYI Do not count on the Tx to be calibrated when it is delivered. I was getting strange results with a recommended setup until I recalibrated the sticks, sliders and knobs. I do not know if it was due to the as delivered configuration or something else.

It's useless to recalibrate after updating.

It's however easy to wipe your calibration when transferring things incorrectly with companion.
