Nope - if 2 people have the last of an item in their cart, only the first guy to complete the purchase will get it, the other guy gets an out of stock message. There are a ton of open carts at any given moment. Some are humans, some are bots. People price shopping, checking out shipping expenses, etc. The vast majority of carts do not end up in a purchase.

Imagine, I could go to a site and put all of their inventory in my cart and they would not be able to make any sales.

We have had a few people make a check/cash purchase on a hot item, then not pay us. We may wait weeks for the payment, and then cancel the order, finally releasing the stock for someone else to purchase it. It sucks, and why you do not see many sites willing to accept that sort of payment.

Yup. Definitely had more than once on more than other sites where a "low stock" item I put in my cart gave an "out of stock" error when I clicked "purchase." And then going to that product page indeed showed out of stock now.

The only time I've had stuff saved, related to appointments such as COVID tests and vaccines in the height of the pandemic, where you select a time and the site then gave you a 15 minute countdown time to add all your information and confirm your appointment, at the expiration of the timer would then release the appointment back to anyone else to grab if you hadn't got through entering all your info and confirming the time, and you'd have to select a new time and start again.

Same for reserving campsites at state parks, where I usually got a 30 minute time after adding a site to my cart to complete the transaction or the site would go back to being accessible for others to grab. In both cases, the amount of time it was reserved before I complete the transaction was clearly noted to me.

Email alerts?
Am I losing it? My memory is that I used to receive an email alert for the first new post in every watched thread.

Now, it seems I only receive an email alert for the first new post in the first updated thread. After that, I receive no further email alert for any watched thread until I visit the site again.

I had come to rely on email alerts to keep up to date with various discussions. Better adjust my behaviour!

Yeah just got one again for this. I think sometimes their is a delay but it has been working pretty well for me lately.

Trouble is, there were recently numerous other posts in another thread I watch -- but I never received a single email. ???

Make sure you are subscribed to the notifications for threads you post in. This is a setting in your profile to do this by default. I think really early users to the site may have had this turned off by default, but newer users should have it on by default.

I'll keep an eye on things. I've been getting emails today and for this thread and for the Uni beta testers' thread, which is the discussion I'm most concerned about.

combining carts on different devices.

So for instance i had a cart going at work. Filled it up. Wasnt sure if i had everything i wanted so didnt check out.
At home i dont have the same cart. But i did get an email saying "did i forget something" and if i click on that link it takes me to the checkout of the stuff i added at work, but if i try to add anything it goes to a totally different cart. Is their a way to combine carts or have the cart linked to our accounts and not a cookie on a specific pc?

Or maybe some html kungfu in the address bar to trick it?

Hmm, no idea on that one. Will see if I can find anything. Guess this will be related to system cookies, but would think if it knew your email, then it should be able to maintain the cart from different devices. Pretty sure our old site could do that..Sometimes with annoying effect.
