Taranis X9D-plus SE ACCST - wont bind to V8RF-II RXs (story as old as FrSKY)

This is going to be a long post for those whom are interested in assisting:

I purchased a used Taranis X9D-plus SE. Tried to load the eSOARPlus program (by Mike Shellim) to it using the OpenTX Companion. Got a warning that the OpenTX version was not compatible with the eSOAR program. Tried to update to OTX 2.3.15 and bricked the TX. Managed to un-brick the TX and tried to rebuild starting with the oldest firmware I could find and working up to the newest. Thought I knew what I what doing but obviously not. Messed with everything.

Here is where I am at after 20 hours of youtube videos.

OpenTX - 2.3.15
TX Firmware - x9dpNonEU_mode2_20180525 (?)
Internal module RF Firmware - XJT_ACCST_2.1.0_FCC.frk (?)

Turn on TX and I get an SD CARD WARNING: Expected Version 2.3V0039

Version Screen on the TX says:
FW: opentx-x9d+
VERS: 2.3.15-otx(1004ef7c)
DATE: 2022-04-22 15:30:36
EEPR: 219
[FIRMWARE OPTIONS]

Under MODEL SETUP
Internal RF
Mode XJT D8
Channel Range CH1-8

External RF
Mode OFF

TX will not bind with existing V8FR-II receivers. I "think" I need to flash the RX with new firmware (which version, or where to get it, I have no clue)
All of the RXs (V8FR-IIs) bind with the DJT module in my X9D-2019

Thank in advance to any and all who are willing to wade into this mess for me

Hey Tim,

Yep - always fun bringing an older radio up to spec. So you have several different firmwares to deal with. One is OpenTX, and another is the RF protocols in the transmitter and also the receiver. As I recall there is no newer firmware for the V8 receivers. To talk with these, I think you need the old V1 RF firmware in the radio. (probably still installed.) and you then set the radio to D8 mode to bind to the V8FR-II. Please check the manual for the V8FR-II as it will outline the method for getting it into D8 mode, and you should be able to bind right away. (Just checked and you need to jump signal pins for channels 1 and 2.)

I may be wrong, but theink the transmitter can be either V1 or V2 for this to work.. When in doubt, use V1 for this application. You can download the little V8 manual here:

V2 firmware in the XJT also supports D8, so there should be no need to go back to V1 firmware.

For the XJT module, use this file: https://www.frsky-rc.com/wp-content/uploads/Downloads/Firmware/ACCST-2.1.x/FW-XJT-v2.1.0.zip
For OpenTX use the binary that can be downloaded from Companion. Companion can be downloaded here: https://www.open-tx.org/2022/04/22/opentx-2.3.15
Be sure to configure the right radio-type x9d+ and not the 2019 version as it's a different radio-type!

If you use an older version of OpenTX, then D8 might not work correctly (in combination with V2 XJT firmware that is), so best to use 2.3.15.

PS. I use it myself in my x9d+.

Thank you. I will work on this today and report back.

I did some research and I have both radios, an X9D-plus and a X9D-2019. The 2019 has the external DJT module for ACCST and works great and it is running OTX 2.3.15. The Plus is the one with the issues. It does not have an external module.

I have the FW-XJT-V2.1.0 on the radio now and it does not allow me to bind :(

well - no joy.

Tried to flash the internal module with XJT_ACCST_2.1.0_FCC.frk just to make sure I was using that version. Loaded FW onto SD card, navigated to folder on TX, selected .frk file and selected "Flash internal module". Got "Device reset . . . " and then got "Firmware update error Device not responding [EXIT]"

Can't find V1 firmware online

V1 firmware is available on the same download page. (although it is somewhat hidden) see image below

Here is a direct download link for V1 firmware XJT-Ver170317.zip

Are you sure you have a Taranis X9D Plus?
There are three main versions of these radios requiring different firmware?
There is an X9D, X9D+, and X9D+ 2019
You can usually tell by looking what is listed under the LCD screen.

X9D.webp
If ACCST is just listed it's an original "X9D"

X9D+.webp
If plus is also shown it's a "X9D+"

X9D+2019.webp
If ACCeSS is listed it's a "X9D+ 2019" with an ISRM internal module. This one will not transmit the D8 protocol.

Hope this helps - Rich

That should make no difference. The Plus SE is still the same basic radio with a few additional options.
Your radio appears to be the X9D+ that someone added a removable antenna. (you have the standard gimbals, the SE has hall gimbals)

You can't update the internal module from the bootloader screen as this is only to update the OpenTX firmware.
You have to start the radio, long press the MENU button, page to the next page, select the "FIRMWARE" folder, use the minus or plus buttons to get to the "XJT_ACCST_2.1.0_FCC.frk" V2 file or the "XJT-Ver170317.frk" V1 file, then long press ENT key and select "Flash internal module".

This could also be caused by a faulty or failing micro SD-card card. My flying buddy had this happen as well, after replacing his original SD-card with a new one he did not have the issue anymore. You could try to read back the firmware file from the SD-card and do a binary compare to the file you downloaded (and upzipped after downloading). It will likely show differences between the files, or being unable to read the file at all.

Might be the reason for the SD Card warning "Expected version 2.3V0039"

well - that was a waste of 3 hours. Accomplished nothing. New SD Card. Downloaded SD data from OTX. SD Card warning went away :)

Still can't bind to anything. Decided to install the external DJT module from my X9D-2016. Well, now I can bind to the V8FR-II but not the X8R.

Could the internal RF module be bad?

Could be that the internal XJT module is faulty, did you check the connections inside the radio already?
