Sunset State Beach Camp N Fly May 2-3 2020 :)

I know, it's nuts. Places I went to in the 90's were practically empty, now a days they are packed. I'll never see Yosemite, unless Captain Trips..

I think we may have a limited shuttle this year. Probably cell phone based pickups. Figure a few of us can do half hour shifts..?

There is FREE parking outside the campground (I think it is free) and there is camping down in the day use area. (Got to be out by sunset) It is just that they have almost no parking near the glider port itself. We will attempt to work with the rangers to have a better greeting at the gate and keep them in the loop as to what we are doing to make things operate smoothly and with their desires.

Please do not park in dirt or on grass, you will probably get a huge ticket and we will get a black eye with the rangers. This is a great location, lets not mess it up.

If you want to camp we will do our best to find you a spot. If you want to motel it, I suggest you work together and see if you can settle on a single hotel to possibly make things a little easier and more fun. For the ISR in the years past all of the glider folks stayed at one hotel, it was a lot of fun as we took over the darn place and tended to enjoy meals together.

Holiday Inn! Holiday Inn! (I have a gold card)

Doc.

I do have room in my campsite if anyone needs to put up a tent. As far as parking, if everyone that camps would keep there vehicles in their campsites so the people who do not camp can have some of the parking at the glider side parking area would be appreciated. If you come after 10-11am or so the parking at the glider port is usually full. You can park down at the beach and walk back up (or ask someone who has a campsite to drive you back up) as a last resort. Unfortunately there is not unlimited parking, so the earlier you get in, the better. Best thing to do is ask the people on RCgroups in the Camp N Fly thread to see if you can use one of their parking spots to park at when you get in. I have to keep my second parking spot for my wife if she decides to show up on Saturday. LOL.

how many vehicles do they allow in the camp spots? I remember them being long enough to hold 4 mid size vehicles, but cant remember if the limit is 2 that they allow.

From the Sunset Beach Website:

"FEES: Registration fees are required upon entry. Campsites hold a maximum of eight people and three vehicles. The camping fee includes one primary vehicle and one towed in, licensed vehicle or trailer. Additional vehicles will be charged an extra vehicle fee.
VEHICLES: All vehicles must remain on the pavement at all times, with the exception of the Pine Hollow Loop and the dirt overflow parking area directly across from the Dunes Loop. If extra vehicles will not fit in the campsite parking area, the vehicles must be parked in one of the overflow parking lots located outside the Dunes and South Camp loops. "

I think it would be nice if we maybe set up a little schedule for the mornings and evenings to shuttle people to and from their parked vehicles. If we each took a 30 minute shift it would not be a huge impact on any given person. Maybe have a single cell phone people can call to request a pickup or drop off? We could identify a safe parking spot that is outside of the campground even..? Thoughts?

Do we know how many people are coming ? I see on BAMF Facebook that there are 14 confirmed and 7 maybes.... how many are camping on site?

We have this advertised in many places. The majority tend to come from the slope section on RC Groups. We managed to reserve a bunch of the campsites this year, as a result I think this will be our biggest attendance year. I think we had about 40 pilots or so each day last year..? Each probably brought 5 planes with them.

We always have a great time, we look forward to it all year!

Over half of the employees here are planning to go. :)

at 3 vehicles per spot im sure we could fit people at campsites so they dont have to walk far. Maybe as we get closer we could make up a list of sites that are ok to park at. Like a list so as they come in they can drive by those numbers and if a spots open they know they can park without worries. Like for instance i have myself and one other persons car right now leaving one more car that could be parked. Or maybe we make some kind of signage to tape to one of our cars so flyers know they could use that spot?

Strange that is says 3 vehicles per site, because i know for a fact most of them will not hold more than two on pavement. Some even only have enough room for one vehicle. Interesting. I know when the second (or third) vehicle come in they have to now the name of the person who signed up for the campsite and what campsite number of course, plus pay the $10.

We do have a potluck BBQ on Saturday evening at campsite #2 every year and it is what I look forward to every year. It is so much fun! If you come to the event BBQ, please post up what you are bringing so we do not have everyone bringing the same thing. Best to post in the RCgroups thread. Please post what you are bringing abut a week before the event so it is easier to find what other people are bringing.

I usually hit up Wayne and Michael at Dream-flight for some give a way prizes! No fee to get a ticket other than showing up and being there for the raffle. I usually pull the winners around 4-5pm Saturday eve right before the BBQ. :)

Don't forget the glider swap meet! If you have some gliders to sell or give away, this is a great event to bring them to. There are always some great deals to be had.

I hope to bring the following models if I can make enough room for them:
Ahi
Hobie Hawk (Just picked it up, little beat up, but should be good to go!)
Jaguar (Also just picked this one up, always wanted one of these.)
Sera DSX
Sera Sailing
Stormbird Forza (prototype)
Firebird (prototype)
Magnus (new 60" plane should be ready by then)
Maybe an Alpha 2.8
Maybe I will get one of my Boomerang flying wing samples up and flying in time. :)
and I better bring my Mephisto! She is too sweet to leave at home.. Dang that is a lot of planes to fit in the truck.

Bring & Buy!

DONT tell "She who must be obeyed!" AKA (For is Blimey Brits) 'Er indoors.

I am a bit Sierra-Charlie-Romeo-Echo-Whiskey-Echo-Delta...all my stuff is waaaaay to far away to bring!

OH well - I'll probably end up bringing stuff back.

Woohoo!

Doc.

I found the Holiday Inn to be too expensive. So I went with Hotel 6 for less than half the cost.
Not too worried about the cost for just 2 or 3 nights James. Also I will have "She who must be obeyed" with me.

But we can coordinate.

Cheers,

Doc.
