Sunset Build Challenge??

Jarron and I were enjoying our typical lunch time discussion of (bad) airplane designs.. This degenerated into silly airplane ideas.. And that got me to thinking about an earlier discussion we had here for some sort of group build, or group challenge for Sunset '24.

Have any suggestions for a challenge? Lets hear it! I am not tied to the pool noodle at all, just a random thought and shared here to see if it gets any ideas flowing.

Can't even imagine how one builds from pool noodles so following with great interest ;):giggle:

Cheers
Dave

The (to be) annual Sunset Beach Ugliest Gutpile Frankenglider Challenge

Build the ugliest, nastiest looking, glider out of all your discarded but not chucked out gutpile relics.

The rules?

It has to actually fly, and be at least marginally safe: i.e. all the various parts must be connected by string...and thats it.

Doc

wings, fuselage and tail have to all come from different models.

ha, ha : a large fraction of my fleet directly qualifies :giggle:;)

Putting them in to a usable block wont be too big of an issue. Im kind of cheating by using a hotwire cutter.
I imagine if you just put a bunch together as is into a flat plate you would have a very draggy, but still "flyable" wing.

Main issue is that they have memory of the position they came in rolled up. Im thinking about how i can straighten them.

Here is the general idea with the laminating of the multiple noodles after squaring them off.

@thenated0g the rules for the build specify the use of hand tools only, a knife and sanding block.:geek:

The problem here is that its not serious enough to be really serious, and not silly enough to be really silly.

If you ask people what they want, they'd say I want a competition for:

Roolz:

1. 60" models with names beginning with "A"(Got one of them)
2. That have to fly 10 consecutive loops (I'm really good at them with my ACME 60)
3. And then land within the landing zone (I'm really familar with small landing zones and my ACME 60)
4. Oh, and I win.

Or maybe they have a favourite 2M model etc.

To spread it out over everyone's potential; how about just put up a competition for anyone to make and fly their own design model out of any material they like, and have it judged static, and in flight acording to a simple points/manoeuvre schedule, by a panel of three experienced and respected modellers.

Not sure if that would get the juices flowing or not?

Me? I'd soon be scrabbling about for gutpile remnants, or looking to see where I put that 1/4" balsa sheet etc.

Doc,

I like that idea. Even if a builder didn’t get to Sun Set they would still end up with a nice useable model.

I’d be more inclined to enter that type of competition.

Chris and I were talking about some silly pool noodle ideas. I was going to let it pass, but Nate has put on some heat. :)

I blame Nate!!

^^^^ No, that is the name of the plane!;)
