Spectrum AS-3X

You would need to get some sort of Spektrum module for the back of the Taranis. MPM versions seem the most popular.

Thanks for the reply. I looked up the MPM Spektrum module but I have not found the connection, could you give me a lead, Thanks Ed

You wrote that I should try a Spectrum module and that the MPM version is the most popular, so I guess I would need the acronym MPM spelled out. Thanks, Ed

MPM= Multi Protocol Module

If you are in the USA it would be highly advisable to NOT use these as none are compliant with the Law of the land. That is none carry an FCC certification for all the protocols and power used. Using these will expose you to legal and financial liability should somebody want to drag you into the administrative courts.

The short is move away from the 20th century tech that is Spektrum and move to the modern, 21st century, native FrSky tech and RF Protocols.
Is there a reason you you want to stay with AS3X and not move fully to FrSky?

I just ran across the E-flite Draco 2.0 and since it comes PNP, I wanted to explore if I could use my Taranis Plus as the transmitter. I had previous problems with one of their products and had to return it and that was before I switched over to FrSky. Some of the info I have seen so far seems to suggest that I could do that without the MPM. I saw a previous posting where you explained the reasons for not using an Orange module and I totally agree with you I didn't know that they are not Kosher. If you know of a thread that deals with the Spectrum compatibility issue I would appreciate it. Thanks, Ed

At one time Spektrum did sell a JR style module running Spectrum DSM2. I just look at the Spektrum site and can’t find any modules for sale.

There is nothing to stop you from removing the Spektrum AS3X RX and installing a FrSky receiver. In fact I recommend that you do such a thing. Frsky has some gyro stabilized receivers that offer much the same features that of AS3X.

But no, you can’t run any Spektrum receiver on DSMX or DSM2 protocols on FrSky Tx protocols. It is best if you make a clean break from Spektrum.

PNP = plug-and play - no receiver.
BNF = bind and fly - with receiver (unless PO took it out)
RTF = ready to fly - with receiver and transmitter
Make sure you have a receiver in it .....

Spektrum offers this: https://www.spektrumrc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdId=SPMMSJR910
I have used it on a few of their BNF models, with a Taranis. It can be a little tricky to find the correct settings for it when defining it in the radio, the first time.
While it transmits using their DSM2 protocol, it is a pretty old device, so there is no guarantee that it will work with all Spektrum BNF models - they have done several updates to their AS3X and safe technologies since this came out.
The link points to the combo package - the module and a receiver. The receiver is not needed if the module works with the BNF plane, and could be sold to recoup some of the price. (My hobby shop opened the package, and gave me credit toward the purchase for the receiver!).
The module itself is labeled as a "DM9", so a search for that may find some for sale.

A little late here but I just bought the 2019 Taranis SE. I also wanted to fly BNF Spektrum planes using that radio. After some searching I found a Lemon TX module that is Spektrum compatible, FCC approved (so legal to use in the US, unlike the unapproved MPM modules), and is only $30. If all goes well I’ll receive my Taranis on Friday, get it all programmed, and do my maiden flight of my Turbo Timber UMX at my club’s indoor fly this Sunday morning. I’ll update my results of the Lemon Spektrum module here later. I was asked to do so in another thread, from that thread and this it appears the Lemon TX module is not well known.

Update: This worked on my Turbo Timber UMX flawlessly. However, it did not work on a Mini Convergence VTOL. Still troubleshooting to see if I did something wrong, or if it's inherently incompatible with the Rx and/or flight controller used in that plane.
