Because I have airplane ADD, here is another build thread lol. The truth is I like to have multiple projects going at once so I can always work on something if I'm waiting for parts or still working out part of the design etc. I get to pick and choose.
VTPR is a French acronym that loosely translates to "Aerobatics Close to the Ground". Originating in France, most of these aircraft are homebrew types with the zenith being about 100" span. There are/were a few kits offered, one of them being a Sonic. I wanted to build a Sonic for VTPR flying, but after my emails to the mfg to buy a fuselage they stopped replying, so I decided to just roll my own. These planes are typically very light for their size, with large control surfaces. Think of them as somewhat the 3D type of the unpowered world.
This is a Sonic:
This is one of my favorite videos of this type of flying:
really love this style of flying. I have an Ahi, but I'd like something bigger which is why I'm going this route. I was able to get a Mark Allen Falcon 880 fuselage. Not ideal, I'd like more side area, but it will have to do. Airfoils will be what seem to be the accepted SB96 series, 100" span. I plan to sheet the 1 lb. white foam cores with 1/32" balsa, trying to keep the whole build as light as possible. No flaps, just ailerons. I want a Madstab (180 degrees of total travel) as well, so I've designed a pull-pull arrangement with 3D printed root ribs and cams. The ribs weigh 4.5g as shown. I have the core templates laser cut, so that's where I'll start. I'm waiting for a carbon wing tube, and a few other bits to really get going.
