We had a group of pilots visit Thorton Beach on Sunday and we were welcomed with good flying conditions. Wind was coming down the slope and started off very strong and over time with all of the crazy weather going on, things starting shifting some and lift would go from strong to so-so. after a while some of us wandered North to check out Fort Funston, but there was NO lift there.
Protective bags for printed planes is not a bad idea! Ollie brought a pair of Slingshots, and Myself, Jarron and Rafael also brought ours.
It really is not a slope you want to climb, can you spot the plane and pilot? (Trick, the plane is not visible.)
Not sure what Jarron did but he ended up a little ways down with his Slingshot, here he is on the way up using the plane as walking stick.
I thought I filmed some action, but I didn't. I know Rafael captured some.
So here are my thoughts on Thorton for our racing. The site will work very well. It is very friendly landing and the ice plant makes for added cushioning for less than perfect landings. It is a perfect length for setting up the course. And I'm told if we end up with a foggy day you can still fly below the fog here. (We are in the foggy season now... all summer) The only downside is the cliff face is not the best for recovery, but it can and was done. Think we ended up with 3 planes on the cliff. Racing will be fast and fun.
There was ample parking on Olympic Way, just go past the horse rental place, this is also closer to the trail that goes down to the flying area.
