I would love one, but not sure if i can make it until i know when we are doing it.
should i include your name in the list for one?I would love one, but not sure if i can make it until i know when we are doing it.
Doesn't get much more local for me. This would be amazing.Thinking Thornton is a really good option. It works well, no local pilots to piss off and it makes a great race course.
For clarity, Thornton slope is down lower towards the water, there is a trail you walk down to get to the lower slope. This gets you out of the way of the majority of people milling around at the top and gives us a nice big landing area and clean lift. Think it helps avoid lighter fog too.
I think this tag is about the right area for the slope:

Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.maps.app.goo.gl
It might be a little further south on that trail. It has been many years since I have been down there.
Does this sound OK for the first race? I think it is little more central for folks.
Of the sites I know locally, it's the best I can think of for an event. The wind conditions are among the most consistent as it faces the Pacific.Thinking Thornton is a really good option. It works well, no local pilots to piss off and it makes a great race course.

Hope it works out for you guys and that it's well attended. I'm out of town at that time. I'll try to catch you at that next race. Let the carnage, ahem, racing begin! We are doing a day run to Sunset May 30 or 31 depending on how the weather looks. I thought we could do some practice there is anyone wanted to join us.
For the first race, what do you think of June 13 or 14th, or June 20 (21st if fathers day)??? Think it gives folks enough time to get the planes built and flown. Just a suggestion. We have some good momentum so I'd like to keep it going.
Don't worry, you will fit right in.In the 6 months or so that I've had the bug, I've only really flown balsa models by myself. I think a handicap is only fair, so...
Anytime in July or August works. We can pick another date, this is pretty short notice, so rolling it back is not an issue.
Please let us know what looks good if the above dates aren't a good match for you.
Thanks!

Is there someone who has been there locally who can comment on the access to the cliff area? There is no parking near the cliff edge itself. It's up on an access road next to some horse stables from what I remember. It appears that there's a parking now dedicated to Thornton. My recollection is that the path down was steep-ish and soft, sandy soil, but perhaps they've improved that as well. The only potential reservation I might have would be for anyone who might have limited mobility.

Great. Thanks for that. That helps quite a bit. Not to date my self too much, but I remember when there used to be a road down to a parking lotIt's still as you describe, at least where I have been going. Maybe further north is easier to get to, with more room for a crowd on the cliff (yellow path.) I'll have to look.

These events are always fun, and always things to be learned. I think flying flaps may be new for you, so for sure ask one of the more experienced folks for some help setting up the plane and maybe a little training on landing approaches. You will be a rockstar in no time.
