Slope MOMs Racing - Lets get this going!

We are doing a day run to Sunset May 30 or 31 depending on how the weather looks. I thought we could do some practice there is anyone wanted to join us.

For the first race, what do you think of June 13 or 14th, or June 20 (21st if fathers day)??? Think it gives folks enough time to get the planes built and flown. Just a suggestion. We have some good momentum so I'd like to keep it going.

Thinking Thornton is a really good option. It works well, no local pilots to piss off and it makes a great race course.

For clarity, Thornton slope is down lower towards the water, there is a trail you walk down to get to the lower slope. This gets you out of the way of the majority of people milling around at the top and gives us a nice big landing area and clean lift. Think it helps avoid lighter fog too.

I think this tag is about the right area for the slope:

It might be a little further south on that trail. It has been many years since I have been down there.

Does this sound OK for the first race? I think it is little more central for folks.

Hey everyone!
First of all, thank you all so much for the interest and support for this project, I honestly did not expect this many people to be interested in it 😄
To help me better organize production and avoid printing too many or too few frames, I’m going to start keeping track of who wants one and roughly how many frames I should print.
I’ll keep an updated list below and continue adding names as more people show interest in the model.
For now, the entire model will be fully 3D printed in white PETG.
Thank you again for all the support, feedback, and enthusiasm for the Next Racing! 🚀

I’ll do my best to keep the list updated as accurately as possible.
If your name is missing from the list, the quantity is incorrect, or you would like to change the amount, just leave a comment on this post and I’ll update the list accordingly 😄

We won’t be able to accept any more requests for the Slingshot after this Friday, because we still have a lot of printing to do before the event.
So the final deadline to request a Slingshot is
May 15th.
If you know anyone who wants to participate in our glider racing event and still needs a Slingshot, please let them know so they can place their request before the deadline.

Doesn't get much more local for me. This would be amazing.

In the 6 months or so that I've had the bug, I've only really flown balsa models by myself. I think a handicap is only fair, so...

...can mine have a rocket pod?

Of the sites I know locally, it's the best I can think of for an event. The wind conditions are among the most consistent as it faces the Pacific.

Is there someone who has been there locally who can comment on the access to the cliff area? There is no parking near the cliff edge itself. It's up on an access road next to some horse stables from what I remember. It appears that there's a parking now dedicated to Thornton. My recollection is that the path down was steep-ish and soft, sandy soil, but perhaps they've improved that as well. The only potential reservation I might have would be for anyone who might have limited mobility.

I'd like to get out for a scouting trip and will report back if I do. The forecast for this weekend is nothing short of a blowout on Friday and Saturday.

Ollie

Hope it works out for you guys and that it's well attended. I'm out of town at that time. I'll try to catch you at that next race. Let the carnage, ahem, racing begin!

Don't worry, you will fit right in.

These events are always fun, and always things to be learned. I think flying flaps may be new for you, so for sure ask one of the more experienced folks for some help setting up the plane and maybe a little training on landing approaches. You will be a rockstar in no time.

We can pick another date, this is pretty short notice, so rolling it back is not an issue.

Please let us know what looks good if the above dates aren't a good match for you.

Thanks!

It's still as you describe, at least where I have been going. Maybe further north is easier to get to, with more room for a crowd on the cliff (yellow path.) I'll have to look.

June 20/21 works great for me. Wife and kids are out of town and I'll need something to motivate me to be dressed and out of the house before 2 PM.

The previous weekend not so much but I'll try.

Great, can't wait.

I've been messing with flaperons on the Ridge Runt and I have a few sessions on an electric bush style plane (RIP) with them, but I don't really know what I'm doing. I'll have to finally assemble the SoarKraft model I've printed specifically for trying out flaps.

I'm not sure why I've never flown at Thornton, I'm always a bit further north at Mussel Rock where the landing area is fine for foamies, but not the best for much else. I'll have to scout this out.
