Slope MOMs Racing - Lets get this going!

Im planning on joining this time too and will probably be out there a bit early as I only have one flight on my slingshot and accidently deleted the model from my radio so had to rebuild it last night... 🤦 Would be good to get a test flight in before racing starts if possible. Otherwise Ill just huck it and pray! Haha
If the forecast holds, you should be able to fly from the early morning…plenty of time!

Just a quick note on the results from today's race at Thornton Beach. It was the best turnout yet with fourteen racers competing. The conditions were the best yet of any event but not quite the blowout of the forecast. Congratulation to Mark and Mike R, garnering first and second place respectively, after a close fly-off. Looks like an inside job on the part of Aloft as Wayne and Jarron ended the competition tied 3rd and 4th place 😇 . More to come after people post their photos and videos.

Today was so much fun! First flying I;ve done in 20 years and it was awesome. Glad to see I still can fly@ lol. It was great seeing old acquaintances and meeting new friends! Best day for me in many years! Thanks to Aloft and Jarrin and Waine for all their help. Great little plane as well. Thanks again for the best day in decades!

I like to notice some non-race-compliant planes !

Had a great time yesterday at my first ever rc racing experience. It was super fun and a great bunch of people. Looking forward to getting out and trying it again!

I took one short video of the first few laps of a race but was having too much fun to take any other photos/videos

Awesome time, awesome turnout. We would have had 2 more pilots racing, but their planes suffered from issues prior to starting the race. I think one was a radio issue and he lost everything in the ocean, and not sure what happened to the pink plane, but sounded like he was planning to repair it and fly it at the next race day. (Yes, lets keep racing!!) They were kind enough to flag at the far corner for a lot of the races. Awesome! One of the pilots had a JW EPP wing, and I held it up and asked the other pilots if he could race it against us, and everyone said YES. Awesome. He decided to to flag for us instead.

I am blown away with how great you all are! You are all helping one another, you are all flying good clean races, and well seems like we are all having a grand time. I am so excited to see this going so well.

We were blessed with darn near perfect weather and generous lift. Just check out the photos and you will get the idea. We had a lot of practice flying going on before the start of the race, people tuning in their planes, and one person flying for the first time in 20 years! Yes, 20 years! (and he tied for 5/6th position!)

Now a bit about me and Jarron in 3/4 place, this is really the result of use calling cuts at the base pylon. Something we really had not been watching too closely for. It surprised a few of the advanced pilots that are really good at cutting the pole super tight, in some cases this either killed their momentum, or ended up in a double cut, thus a DNF score. Things would have been very different scoring if they had not cut. This was one of those brutal racing lessons. I am happy to report all pilots took the cut calls very well. After all, this is just a fun series. No prizes. You are all rock stars!

I think we had 2 flights with some airplane rubbing, I was one of them when I came up from under the other racer and we lightly touched. All good. I think that was Mark? I think Konrad said he had also touched during a race. I do not recall any carnage during the racing, but think one plane had taken some damage at some point. Oh yeah, there was one accident when one of the pilots started watching the wrong plane. It didn't end so well. :(

Everyone was landing really well. Funny storry. I was up in the first heat, and we had our race and then we went to land. The other pilot landed first and it was a perfect landing, suddenly the other pilots that had watched the landing rewarded the pilot with very polite golf clapping. I thought that was funny and awesome. So then I landed, maybe not a perfect, but no clapping. What the heck? I yelled at them and got some clapping. LOL We had clapping for most of the landings.. I only had to remind folks a few times. I do hope this will become a little tradition. :)

Ok - I think I am done using the word 'awesome' for a little while. Onto the photos.

I took some launch photos and then fed them to AI to combine the images into a single... It did not go to plan. LOL

Trust me, that was the decent one. I'm too lazy to figure out the magic prompt. Wait - one more try..

I think a great caption for this photo would be: "Hey Kyle, can I fly now?" In reality I wanted to get a picture of the spotters and pilots working together, in this one we see Jeromy(white hat) spotting for Kyle (tall guy). A quick tap on the shoulder to let him know when to turn is really handy.

I really hope everyone had a great time. Sure seemed like you all did. I saw some massive improvement in speed as our newer race pilots started using the slopes full potential. The plane setups are all on the numbers now, thanks to the experts passing on the magic CG and throws.

Thank you again to Ollie for being the backbone of the events and CD the races. We would not be where we are if it were not for his dedication. I can not say enough good things about this Sling Shot design either. Those of us that are flying them see how good this plane works, and even though we have some differences in the planes, I really do not see any given model that has a speed advantage. It really comes down to the piloting skills and I see everyone this last race really improved, EVERYONE. This plane is fast, efficient and rewards good setup and piloting wonderfully. Thank you, thank you, thank you Ollie for sharing it with us! Fun to fly, and fun to race.

That's what it's all about! Fantastic!

I would also add it was a great deal of fun..again. I missed the second race, but at the first one I maidened, flew one race and blew the landing destroying my plane. I brought out V2 for this race and everything except the elevator setup was exactly the same so I thought my maiden would be uneventful. I was wrong. Mike R. asserted I had waaaaayyyyy to much elevator and just over-controlled it. It ended up spearing itself into the beach. From the top it looked like it would be just fine, however when I got there the left wing was split in half and I was afraid I was destined to be an all day flagger. But Mike said, lets just put some CA. and tape, so we did. We adjusted my elevator way down and took it out again, this time with Mike as my test pilot. She flew fine. When coming in for a landing we hit a hard rotor and it snapped hard and we heard a, "crack". This time the tail boom ended up with a circular split. Again with the CA. and tape.
Long story slightly shorter, I ended up flying, and surviving all 3 of my races.
Thanks to Ollie for setting it up, Wayne and crew for the racing supplies, and Mike for his CA. and tape :)

Guy I was so wrapped up in things I didn't know of your added fun. :) Glad you kept her together, and as I recall you were turning some good laps with the tape beast. :)

I too had my fuse break at the wing saddle after my first race when landing. CA and some black electrical tape had me finishing the day which was all I was hoping for! The landing wasn't that harsh it dropped from a couple feet up, must have hit some hard dirt or something, but luckily the plane flew well after repairs and I went on to finish the day and have the best time in a VERY long time! The last time I held a transmitter was over 20 years ago and I was going 297mph at Goat Rock! I was happy to see it WAS like riding a bike and I quickly got back into the flying. Everything was new to me, plane, transmitter, it all took some getting used to as the controls were different than my old JR tx but got it figured out. Thanks again to everyone for such a great, fun day! Just need to remember SUNSCREEN for next time! I have reverse raccoon sunburn face, but it was worth it 100 times over!

Funny story. I was the "helper" (term used very loosly here) for both Sumit and Mike R. On my round with Sumit, the opponent hit 10 when I was on 8 and Sumit was NOT lapped. I use my fingers and everything!
Shortly after that race I was helping Mike and was really really focusing on my finger counting....and I forgot to tap him when the flag went down. He was most of the way back before I realized it! Fortuntely he is a competent racer and really didn't need me :)
And yes, walking and chewing gum is hard as well!

I know it is short notice, and I know a bunch of you have not flown Sunset yet. Jaron Jeremy and I will be going to Sunset State Beach this Sunday.

Sunset is a really fun site, and would be ideal for the Sling Shots. I can bring the flags and we can get in some practice. Let me know if you think this sounds like fun and I'll bring the flags.

Bring some other planes too, just about anything can fly there on a normal day. Landing is simple. Short hike up to the slope, costs $10 or so for a day pass.
