James - This is our actual racer thread about our races and for our racers. Lets keep this thread on subject. We have another thread to discuss possible models for MOM. Or if you like, start a new thread. Lets not pollute this one with this particular topic. I highly encourage you to pull together some MOM racing in Taiwan, I'd be willing to bet the locals would love it! Keep it fun.

To be clear, we are having one more race at Throton this year as the weather will close off for the rest of the year for this site. I would very much like to see us host a few more races this year! My rough ideas for locations are:

Los Banos during the fun fly there (if they reopen the darn site). Thinking just a brief one hour sort of race, maybe we can lend our planes to other pilots so they can check it out? This event brings people in from some far flung places. Might be a good way to spread the fun.

Mike R has some knowledge of some sloe sites that have not been flown for years in the general bay area. These are very exciting to me and I'd love to check them out. We don't have an impact on local pilots this way, and we all learn about some new sites in the local area. Win win!

Coyote - I do think we could do a race at Coyote and it would be very different than Thorton. I think this will make it pretty fun. It will probably be on the lower lift and maybe a rather small course but think it will force different skills to shine. This is another great challenge to add to our racing.

I think the above will take us through the remainder of the year and get us all more stick time on our planes.

@Wayne I am trying to find the date of the next race. I wonder if it would be possible to edit the first post or something with the date(s) of race(s) ? My wife is planning crap and I need to know what day(s) to block out. (that's a lot of (s)'s in there )

We had a thermal pilot visit the shop yesterday, and after seeing the Slingshot he was asking about joining. I almost got him to commit, I might have twisted his arm REALLY hard. His biggest fear was that he has never raced and didn't want to embarass himself. He is going to come to the next event to check things out and get to know the group. I think he will fit right in. That makes me very happy.

I feel the same way about thermal contests - I have never attempted one, it is all new to me. but I have watched a little of them in person, and don't seem all that scary anymore.

Third Slingshot MoM Event: September 12th, 12 pm noon @ Thornton Beach​

Just a friendly reminder, the next event of the season will be held the Saturday after Labor Day, September 12th. We'll follow the same basic game plan as last time:

• Start time: 12 noon
• Location: Thornton Beach, the same spot as last month's event
• The wind usually blows strong enough before midday to permit any last minute test flights

Rafael says that Aloft shipped roughly 60 kits. That means that there are still many who have bought the Slingshot but haven't joined the event. If you still have yours in the box, it's a pretty quick build. There's no time like the present to get with the program. We hope to see some new faces out at the next race.

I think we will have a couple of new pilots for the next race. Have seen 2 new builds in the last couple of weeks when they came by for a shop visit. Can't wait to see them in the air!!

Do you mean show & tell here on the forum, before the race? That would help, so we have time to implement some of the upgrades if needed or desired.

My big question is around ballast. If I were actually able to finish a race (which is still a stretch goal) the next thing would be flying as fast as the conditions allow. I'd love to see some pics of what folks are doing for ballast options.

Also, even more basic question, how much ballast should I plan for? Is 100g enough? I know the amount depends on the conditions, but we've not seen insane wind at Thornton on either of the two last race days, so perhaps just using that as a guide for the max amount of ballast that might be needed.

The show and tell will be at the race. Nothing for you to prep for, it will take some R&D and some new structures in the aircraft to take full advantage of the show and tell. We are bringing stuff for you to break.

Conditions for the race on Saturday look to be the best of all three events. Let's hope the forecast below holds. We'll try to get the event started right at 12 noon.

I wouldn’t go much above 700 grams total flying weight. Unclear how well it handles much above that weight. The added mass also won’t be friendly to a less than perfect landing. Pay special attention that your CG doesn’t move.

Im planning on joining this time too and will probably be out there a bit early as I only have one flight on my slingshot and accidently deleted the model from my radio so had to rebuild it last night... Would be good to get a test flight in before racing starts if possible. Otherwise Ill just huck it and pray! Haha
