here is my landing procedure , if I was not clear .
it is suggested not to break out of the dead air bubble into the moving air,
the model will suddenly get a lot of lift ( having little airspeed ) and potentially stall

I'm not sure what to say about the video. It plays in my browser. Trust me, it's nothing you haven't seen in person. You're not missing anything.

Thanks for sharing your landing approach technique. It sadly it likely wouldn't adapt well to the Slingshot. It's a little bit harder to avoid the "dead air bubble" as you have described it. Perhaps others will have better luck and I encourage more people to try the site with their racers.

when landing , obviously , the model lands inside the dead air bubble.

the problem arises when the pilot decides to abort the landing and exits the bubble flying towards the ocean,
and then suddenly hits a wall of headwind ,
at this instant the model balloons , and possibly stalls.

there is a relatively flat area, with sand, bushes and iceplants.
they have restricted the parking on Palmetto Ave recently,
so there is an additional 100 yard walk (level) from the car to the site.
there are stairs for beach access at Oceanaire.

Thanks for this and the other pictures posted. I had been going to the wrong area, kinda the no man's land by where they were doing construction.

We're going to hold event on Saturday 8/15 in order to accommodate someone coming from SoCal.

• Start time: 12 noon
  
  • Hopefully we can do at least four full rounds as we did last time
  • We may not be able to accommodate pilots who arrive late (yeah, I'm talking about you, Wayne!)
• Location: Thornton Beach, the same spot as last month's event
• Anyone needing to do any test flights, please take care of them before the start of the event. The wind usually blows strong enough to allow flights before midday

Just a couple days to go until the next MoM race. The forecast is flyable but hardly a blow out. Conditions look to be similar to last time. Hopefully that limits some of the turbulence in the landing zone and minimizes some of the carnage .

No changes to the general plan. Start time is 12 noon.

My wing took some damage last race, so nothing like waiting till the last minute to build up the replacement. Thought I would show the flap hack.

Stock you have a large aileron:

Modified you have a large flap:

Just cut off the two small sections of aileron, then flip them upside down and flip the left and right sides. So the little aileron on the right now becomes the little flap on the left.

Second Slingshot Man-on-Man Slope Race Results​

Today's second Slingshot MoM Slope Race is ready for the history books. There was plenty of action to be sure. The racing was fast and often very close. The models were all closely matched--as is to be expected. Pilot skill and nerve--to hold a a trajectory despite the risk of midairs--were the defining factors. And, it didn't take long for the carnage to begin. Jarron and Sumit had the first midair of the series. Sadly both models were lost. Red and Roberto had perhaps the most specular midair of all. Both models sustained substantial damage during their first his with one another. Then they midaired a second time...and kept flying to the end! Undaunted, Red "repaired" his model with copious amounts of packing tape. He and I flew for a final round and he almost beat me with his Slingshot (still??!!) of questionable airworthiness .

Mark Allen took home the gold this time around. The results are below as are a few pics I took before the action got going. To the other pilots, please post your photos and thoughts on the event when you get a chance.

Please take note: Third Slingshot MoM Event: September 12th, 12 pm noon @ Thornton Beach

The next, and likely final event of the season will tentatively be held the Saturday after Labor Day, September 12th. The earlier we hold it the better. The weekend before Labor Day could be even better, but it's too soon IMHO. Once the Indian Summer takes hold in late September and October, the regular westerly winds will be hard to come by. I think Thornton Beach is the best site for the event. I tried a site in Pacifica last weekend. It has many of the same qualities of Thornton but with a shorter walk. HOWEVER, the vortex behind the hill is brutal. In order to change, I'd really like some other fliers to checkout the site. See my earlier posts for details

I thought the Sept race was scheduled for the Slot?
They have the 60” Mom race on the 26th. We could run a Slingshot class, and a run what you bring 60” class if needed.

Mike, I assume that the events are distinct and with a bit of a different emphasis. In my mind, these races are, for now, really centered on Slingshots, one design only and bringing people new to MoM into this type of competition. Adding a 60" class to what we do would be great in the future if there's interest. Also, I personally will have a hard time making that event at the end of September. But, if you want to host an event with the Slingshot at the Slot as part of their race on the 26th, I say go for it! Ollie

I was out of town for a family emergency and I was bummed I couldn't make it. Then I was texting @Red about it and became really bummed

I had high expectations but today’s event exceeded them. Despite the loss of an airframe I had a total blast. Amazing good fun. What an awesome group of guys.

My only takeaways for the future:
1. Bring a sandwich
2. Start the whole planning process earlier in the year so we have a few more chances to fly together.

Other than that, I honestly think the overall concept is just about perfect. I am quite content with Thornton as a new guy. Sure there are always little things to tweak and we can do that, but the overall event is very good.

PS I have to call out Conrad for special thanks. He climbed ALL the way down the cliff face (and then back up!) to retrieve the carcass of my plane after the mid-air.
