Slope MOMs Racing - Lets get this going!

Hi all,

How do I order a SlingShot kit? I got my first one from a friend, and after a major crash I destroyed it.

I don’t know how other servos fit but the Orbits fit perfectly down to the mm. Very convenient and secure.

Two tips:

1. In order to get the servo extension to fit inside the wing for the aileron servos, I had to cut off the large plastic housing that normally holds the two servo plugs together. I glued the two servo plugs together with E6000, and once dry, everything it fit perfectly. This is the lazy man’s alternative to soldering directly as shown in the build thread. I am pretty sure it is just as secure, given how protected the wiring is.

2. I wrapped all my servos in tape and then glued them into the pockets. I am very glad I did this because they are very easily removable. As it happens, I need to yank all four of my servos. For the two aileron servos, I want to put in a slight amount of mechanical differential, so I need access to the control horns. For the flap servos, I need to reset them completely so that the neutral position (i.e. when the flaps are parallel to the wing root) is at negative 100%, not 0% (i.e. center) which is what I mistakenly did initially. Anyway, having the servos glued with E6000 makes this very easy.

I think I did the same as @smirkracing2024, and it's a little different - it fit perfectly if you take the larger outer plastic piece that joins the two connectors off while leaving the crimped metal pieces in place on each end. I just taped it together.

I wish I would have glued all of my servos into place. Oh well.

Edit: your extensions might not have the housing that we're talking about to begin with.

It is somewhat ironic that using screws results in a NON-removable servo and using glue gives the opposite.

It would be relatively straightforward to design a small block which would move the screw from parallel with the wing to perpendicular.

RC cars and even some other airplanes use such a block, for servos, all the time. It would just consist of a small block which has a circular 'button' that mates with the servo where the screw normally goes. Then, it would screw into the wing perpendicular to the wing surface. With that piece, the servos would be removable even when screwed in. This would require a very small modification to the servo bays (to accept a screw perpendicular to the wing) and of course the block itself. Should not add any meaningful weight (even 8 blocks should not weigh more than a gram or two at most). One downside is that it would add 8 more parts to the print. Right now the print is elegant and has very low parts count. Perhaps someone more clever than I am can figure out how to turn the screw 90 degrees in a way that doesn't require a bunch of small parts.

Note: I don't think this is a big deal, and I am not suggesting this needs to happen.
 
Ever since I had a couple glued servos release the magic smoke, I've wondered if taping and glueing effectively insulated them too much.

They were probably just over-stressed, but still, it can't help.

+1 servo trays.

For now I'll just cross my fingers that servo horn that I forgot to secure down with a screw stays in place 😅
 
Sunday July 26th: Mini MoM Practice Session at Thornton Beach at ~2 pm

A buddy and I will be out at Thornton Beach on Sunday July 26th for a mini practice sessions with our Slingshots. All are welcome. We'd like to keep up the momentum from last weekend's race. It's a great time to get your models trimmed for MoM racing without the pressure of competition. We'll also try to answer any questions you may have about the setup for racing. If there are enough of us, we may try to do a few "friendly" simulated MoM races. The wind is usually quite cooperative along the coast in SF during the spring and summer so hopefully we'll be good to go.

A buddy and I will be out at Thornton Beach on Sunday July 26th for a mini practice sessions with our Slingshots. All are welcome. We'd like to keep up the momentum from last weekend's race. It's a great time to get your models trimmed for MoM racing without the pressure of competition. We'll also try to answer any questions you may have about the setup for racing. If there are enough of us, we may try to do a few "friendly" simulated MoM races. The wind is usually quite cooperative along the coast in SF during the spring and summer so hopefully we'll be good to go.

I’m 90% in. Thanks for organizing.
 
I had a small practice sessions yesterday at Coyote Hills. It's a site that definitely doesn't get enough love. While not as scenic as Thornton Beach, it does provide pretty reliable life during spring and summer. Landing is fairly straightforward with a bit of practice. The Windy forecast has been fairly reliable recently--unlike during this springtime. Definitely check it if you're planing a visit. Winds don't pick up usually until around 2 pm. I go usually once a week on either Saturday or Sunday. If anyone would like to join me, just let me know. I'm usually pretty flexible on which day it is.

Conditions were pretty solid yesterday. I realized that the Slingshot I had flown at the contest was right on the edge of instability--controllable but a bit squirrely. It had been repaired many, many times and I guess it had accumulated a bit too much mass in the tail. 5 grams in the nose smoothed it all out. The moral of the story is that the Slingshot is quite sensitive to CG. Just keep that in mind as you're trimming it out.

A few of us are thinking of Thur the 23rd around 2pm at Coyote. If you would like to coordinate just DM me and we can trade numbers etc.

Midweek is tough for me. It makes for an hour plus drive home…without any accident 😬. Occasionally I’ll go if the forecast is for early winds. Weekends are very uncrowded at Coyote in the summer. Springtime is a different story! Just getting a parking spot can be hit and miss.

I’ve often thought about the possibility of setting up pylons at Coyote. The lower hill is the only option. I use it for my solo practice sessions. It is an incredibly short course. It can’t be as long as we had at Thornton. To extend the course, it needs to curve toward the “middle” flat spot. It’s possible as an experiment, but it’s truly not great.
 
A buddy when to a new slope over the weekend - I might go out there this weekend and check it out. :) It in near Vallejo. Sort of like Coyote, but larger area. Looks like it may have promise for racing. They are also heading off to another new site next weekend to check out, not sure of location for that one just yet, but think out towards Oakland.
