Slope MOM Racing - Lets get this going!

Many years ago we had a FUN race series where we visited different slope and we all flew the same economical model. We had a lot of fun. We kept rules and structure to the bare minimum. This is more about getting out and having some fun flying with good folks than it is about winning races. OK - We will probably have some sort of "award" for the winner.

To aid this @OribaSJ88 has offered to let us use his very nice Slingshot design. This is a very nice 3D printed plane. This will keep the budget very low and we will all be flying the same airframes. I know, belly ache about 3D printed planes, but these are different. They are decently durable, have very modern airfoil, and they really respond well. They are a seriously fun model. The cool thing is you will not need to print the planes, Aloft will do that for you!

Here is a little video of me messing around with mine at Sunset. I probably made about 30 landings in about 30 minutes. I was having fun playing with the flaps and generally just enjoying the model.

These planes have not been available to the public until now, BUT only if you are going to race it.

We would like you to work with other local pilots and organize races in your area! You figure out what works best for your group, but we tried to target an afternoon about once a month. We enjoyed visiting different slopes for each race when possible. But above all, don't make a bunch of rules, and don't let in any krusty guys that want to ruin the fun.

We should be able to field good races in So Cal, Nor Cal, and maybe Utah and Oregon. Bonus points for the folks in the midwest! Heck, I might have to reach out to the club on the Florida slope and see if we can get them going on it too.

We can discuss things further here and get the ball rolling.

Who all is interested?

The airfoil and size of the model work very well together. It is using a very modern F3F airfoil, despite its smaller wing span and lower reynolds numbers, it works very well. Build time for the airframe is about 2 hours for your first one. Bolt on wing. As seen in the video we have Cross and V-tail configurations flying. With and without flaps. I highly recommend the flaps as it makes landing much easier and much slower, this will allow the airframe to last a lot longer. Uses cheap servos with good results. We like the Orbit Eras or thin Emax units. Slip off nose cone has plenty of space for radio gear.

You guys printing or can anyone? Also what is the story with that model, @RafaelAvila was explaining a little bit at sunset that you had to get permission to use it. Is it not for sale?

I'd like 2 V tails with flaps, how do I order?

The plane is called "Slingshot" and the designer is a local pilot named Ollie (@OribaSJ88 here on the forums). Ollie is nice enough to allow us to use his design to help jumpstart the MOM racing. It is by far my favorite 3D printed slope glider. Rafael here at Aloft has added the flaps and he built one V-tail version. The v-tail will need some refinement as it it a bit of a hack project currently. But it does perform well, maybe a bit better than the cross tail when teamed up with the flaps. I think the cross tail gets a little blanketed by the flaps at full deflection.

Here is a thread discussing the Slingshots here:

We will be offering the printed airframe kits to racers for a good price. In the past we had some abuse of this system, so we will sell it for a higher price, but you will get a giftcard or partial refund after flying your first race. :)

I personally will be going with the flapped v-tail. I does allow for rudder if you want to install an extra servo. The simple version will be no flaps as it will save a couple of more servos.

Plan is to print in PETG, this will give some heat resistance, but you will still want to keep them out of a hot car.

I have several hours on mine as I have nicked a leading edge (tape fix) and snapped the vertical twice at the same spot due to transporting to the slope. I have not hurt her flying, but like all 3D printed models she is fragile. Prices should be low enough to have a spare airframe as backup. Or goal is to cover the materials and some labor expense. No profit for us selling these.

Interested for NorCal-ish sites.

I would prefer a model that I can print myself. Would be happy to pay for the STLs.

Sorry - Ollie is not wanting to sell the STL files.

We will be offering just one configuration, flapped crosstails. Sorry, no V tails. All planes will be printed with the exact same settings and endfills. A true one design this way.

We will be doing some test prints to lock in settings, then load up a spreadsheet to figure out final cost.

OK - Nor Cal folks - where and when is our first race? Think we could have many of you in airframes in a months time. Should be target 6 weeks from now?

(We go to Sunset in a month, and we could do some practice there..)

Tick Point? Also, when are you going back down to Sunset? I'll cruise down there for sure.
