Servo for tail mod on glider

I need a suggestion for light and very thin servo for stabalizer application. I need a light and sufficent torque for elevator function. also I have never used digital servos and wonder can I just plug one into my standard radio gear receiver and will it work? thanks

Just to add to this. I need 10mm or less thickness and enough torque to operate the elevator on a large almost 3meter glider. Light weight would be desirable as well.

For tail servos it will be difficut to beat these HS08A or B. The X0-8+ is another great servo for the application. If you are trying a V-tail you might want to see what I'm doing in the Alpha 2.8 thread. 10mm stabs or V-tail sounds thick. What are you working with?

As to digital servo with "Standard" radio gear? Today the digital set up is standard. I assume you mean PWM at 50 Hz set up. These KST servo would work great! But with all digital servos you will need very good batteries as the power output is much greater over any given time frame.

So tell us know what you are up to?

Hello Konrad, actually I am working on a scratchbuild Legend T tail. I am following a build by Manu on rc groups etc. and he is using the KST servo for his installation. I was trying to find out what other options for servos might be available and what kind of torque others might think is needed for this kind of application. The KST is likely what I will by from Aloft but I am kind of a cheap guy when it comes to servos etc. so if there is a reasonable alternative that might be the way I would go. I still need to know if I can use a digital servo with my old Micropro 8k converted to 2.4 radio and XPS receivers? Thanks Konrad.

YES to the XPS and digital servos. But use the best batteries you can fit. This means you will need large capacity and high current capacity. The old AA 500 mAh nicads won't cut it!

Going with cheap servos is false economy.

The Legend was/is a T tail so this usually means only one servo to actuate the elevator. In that case the X10 mini low in the vertical fin would be nice. Now do brace the tail boom at the base of the fin and just forward. T-tails but a lot of stress on this area of the structure. Try to keep the weight down low as the boom is subjected to great loads from the high stab during landings.

Sorry, I don't do RCGoofs. I just can't give them the Google hits for their ad base.

Kind of a cheap guy, eh? I'm kind of [ahem] frugal myself, and I've more or less standardized on Corona DS843MG servo's. I'm sure the KST's are great, but at 5X the price of the Corona's, they better be!

The Corona's have proven to be fairly bulletproof for me, in anything from an electric Ugly Stick to a 3m scale glider. They have amazing torque, are small/thin, and light. I also like the included mounting hardware. I've had much better luck with them than e.g. comparable Hitec servo's, which I used to use in the (now distant) past.

The only potential downside is that you won't be able to find replacement gears if you do manage to strip them. I haven't stripped one yet, but I assume that one day I will. Then again, the entire servo costs less than most gear sets.

The DS 843MG is a great value servo. I use them in a lot of my low emotional models (replacement for many foamy servos). I also use them in some of the smaller moldies. But compared to the KST X0-8 the gears are a lot noisier and over time they don't center as well as the KST of the same age (usage). Is the incremental improvement in the KST worth the exponential added cost? For my models with a high emotional investment the answer is yes.

Thank you FD, that is useful info for me. My default servo brand has been Hitec and Futaba for years so I am not very familier other than seeing the names of the many others out there. I will check those out.

Thanks Konrad and Flying Dutchman, I looked at the Corona DS 843MG and it looks like the perfect servo for me and wow what a price. I will order a few extras as well for future needs.
