I saw this model when Wayne got the first ones - in fact I think I even suggested the "Sequoia" name. Really good design that makes good use of the foam/veneer wing old school method. I think it will fly really well and look great especially if you can keep it a natural finish - that Poplar veneer looks really nice in daylight.Started to put this beautiful plane together over the past holiday weekend. I want to keep it as light as possible so I opted for no ballast tube in the fuse, I have enough heavy planes for when it’s blowing. Just need todo servo covers, and battery. I think I will give the veneers a light sanding and put a heavier coat of acrylic clear coat along with some Ultracoat to help with distinguishing from top and bottom. So far I really like the looks of this plane, hope it flies well. I’ll post a finished plane once complete.
I can tell you from experience, DO NOT put any clear on the wings or tails. They are already sealed. I did the same to my Sequoia and it warped all the surfaces. It was a ton of work to get straight again. Learn from my mistake lolStarted to put this beautiful plane together over the past holiday weekend. Woo...thats a word from the wise...could have been a big mistake there.I can tell you from experience, DO NOT put any clear on the wings or tails. They are already sealed. Wow thanks for the heads up I would be bummed to ruin this beauty.I can tell you from experience, DO NOT put any clear on the wings or tails. They are already sealed. I did the same to my Sequoia and it warped all the surfaces. It was a ton of work to get straight again. Learn from my mistake lol
Yes they do have a thin layer of sealer, Im not going to risk it. I'm probably going to cut some vinyl on my plotter.Pretty sure these planes already have a few sealing coats on the wood.
One trick I have found with some other builds, if you are going to brush or spray on a sealing coat, you need to do both sides at the same time. Failure to do so and it will wrap any thin control surfaces. Sometimes you will get lucky and they will straighten out when you coat the other side, but why take the gamble?
I always thought that model had a lot going for it. Super good design for what it is intended for, and half wood to boot? Whats not to like?Woohoo! Should be a nice flying model for you. Wish I could get more of them.
Love the semi transparent poplar veneer. If you put ammonia on the wood after bagging, it gets even more transparent.Ultracote or vinyl will be fine, I used vinyl.View attachment 20179
