Safety First, power down prior to any servicing! (Disturbing photo)

I know I am MUCH more careful with all tools after losing a fight with a table saw in1993 (I even give everyone around here crap about leaving utility knives open!) After almost losing 3 fingers I smartened up. Lucky for me it was not painful at all... I still don't have feeling in one finger tip.
I don't know if things have changed, but back then I was told that nerves only grow about a mm per year... It seems to me like they were close to correct.... Complacency around machinery is WELL rewarded so I choose to pay attention.

I'm still learning to wear safety glasses.. That is my weakness. Amazed I have any eyes left at this point.

Yes, I am the guy that leaves the knives open around the shop. :( Chris yells at me about every day. Seems a habit I can't break. Funny thing is I usually close them at home.

I'm exactly the same. Happily I have to wear glasses for close work anyway as I'm long sighted.

Funny, the Chinese, aways practical, call this "Lau Fa Yuen" or "Old people's eyes"

But seriously its quite possible to get so engrossed in what you are working on to completely forget safety issues. Happily my home made table saw is a really noisy SOB, and after trying to see how sharp the blade was, once, and finding out, the brain shaking racket now kind of wakes me up to the danger.

Unfortunately some people are just Klutzes, not stupid, just clumsy or awkward with power tools. Those are the guys in real danger.

I think we need to...Be afraid!

Doc.

I'm impressed with the skill of your surgeon and the effort you put into the rehab. I say this as I was your "go for" (gopher, helping hand, etc) when you where performing some very fine soldering work on one of my radios. I didn't notice any limitation in your manual dexterity. It wasn't until months later that I learned of your fight with a table saw.
