S6R and S8R configuration questions and concerns

Has anybody flown a hand launch plane with a FrSky S6R S8R?? I'm curious to know which mode works best for assisting a difficult to launch model. I have a Stinger 64 EDF Jet model that is always a struggle to get airborne. It takes a very hard toss, and quick movement to get my right hand onto the elevator quick enough to keep from hitting the ground on climbout. And sometimes it likes to roll over upside down on hand launches. I might think some form of auto correction could help the plane "fly" out on it's own until I can get my hand on the controls.
Straight & Level mode works fine for hand launch. I used to have trouble getting back onto Ele stick quickly until I started launching with left hand (in mode 2) which eliminated the big bounce off the ground.

Hello,
I'm having problems with the S8R. The S8R is always in a 'gyro mode' even with the Ch10 switch in the OFF position.

This is my first stabilize rx so possibly I am not understanding the true operation. I am expecting the gyro to be active in Stabilize and AutoLevel positions which it is AND
I am expecting the gyro to be totally off in the off position, but the gyro is still active in the off position.

I have checked the monitor page on my 9D+ and the ch10 switch is working but has no effect on the gyro in the off position.
So, am I understanding the operation of the gyro properly? and if so what have I missed that allows the gyro to stay active all the time?

I obviously do not want to try a takeoff/test flight with no control over the gyro.

Background:
Everything installed good, I have Ch12 on 3 pos swh. Ailerons on 'Y", Flps on Y Ch 7. S8r has quick mode enabled.
Did a Rx calibration, and all control surfaces are working in the correct directions. I did a Self check w/calibration.
Everything responds correctly EXCEPT I cant get the gyro to turn off. I also tried another switch for ch10 with same results

Thank you for your help
I have experienced most of the set up problems which can occur with these receivers. It is important to ensure you have the instructions with channel settings for the current FW. If you have upgraded FW download the instruction sheet for that version. I now use erskyTX on my QX7 and find that the easiest setup to overlook when setting up mixes for the 3 pos mode switch is to forget to change each switch value to "Replace" the previous mix. "Add" will not work. Open TX should have a similar choice when setting up multiple mixes on a channel.

Bought a scale sailplane with this RX, I have a copy from the PO of the setup on my TX (ts16s)
After I bind will I need to do all the calibration steps like the RX is new?

I need help with S8R configuration. The option for CH5 = Ail2 is not working, and yes, it is selected correctly in the configuration.
Using LUA to configure the receiver.

screens 2.jpg

Receiver has 2.1.2 ACCST firmware (last from Frsky).
Tx is set on D16 V2.1, CH1 to CH16 with telemetry ON.
CH9, CH10, and CH12 are configured properly and all tested working. Self-check shows movements on all surfaces, including Ail2.

Stabilization works on Elev, Rud, and Ail (CH1), but not CH5 (AIL2). The LUA selection "CH5 = Ail2" does nothing.
Tested on a Taranis X9D+ with OpenTX 2.3.15, now trying with my Radiomaster TX16S on EdgeTX 2.8.5 with the same results.

I read somewhere that there should not be mixes on CH5 (Ail2) since the Rx does the job. This was true in my Tx config. Also tried doing a mix between Ail (CH1) and CH5 (Ail2); got the aileron movement on CH5 as expected but the stabilization only works on Ail1 (CH1).

Any idea what am I missing?
This is driving me crazy...

The obvious is to check is whether you tried a substitute servo to ensure no problem with it. swap a working servo. I vaguely remember that the software's blue screen for Aux 5 and Aux 6 has a box that must be either checked or unchecked. (I think unchecked. Manual says select it to turn off the two servos for ailerons.) Being unselected, It let's software know you are using 2 servos but for different functions. i.e. Selecting the box says you are using CH5 for something else like landing gear. One would think the LUA Tx software would do the job also. If you have CH5=Ail2, perhaps that's the same as selecting it. Try undoing that and see what happens. Wish I could help more.

Thanks for replying.

Servos are fine. When I first failed to make work CH5 I took it out of the plane to test in a table. swapped servos. nothing.
I believe that for some reason the LUA is failing to configure this in the RX. Also wait for the famous bar that shows config being sent to the Rx to complete... several times.

Sadly I don't have the SDK USB dongle to try from the computer. I think that is the only thing I have not tried yet.

Did you done a stick calibration?
i.e.
  1. RX leveled
  2. CH12 3 time up/down
  3. wait for all servo to move

Quick Mode - Autolevel Does anyone really understand how this is supposed to work?
I know that in this mode if one has Ail/Elev centered the plane should autolevel. But what happens when in autolevel and moving the sticks?
I seems with very small movements (less than 30%) behaves like roll/pitch limiting, but more than that there can be strange, unpredictable and dangerous behavior! (speaking from experience).
I tried RCGroups and no response...

Hi can use this for wing leveling or auto-level on Gas airplane
I am interesting in if airplane is upside down it move to the corrected level

Did you ever figure this out? Your description sounds like the exact issue I am having. Hours of testing, changing, pulling my hair out, and I can't get Channel 5 to do anything. I have it setup as Aireron 2 as well.

I am using a S6R with the latest firmware and TX16S with 2.9.2.

I just had the exact same issue: Freshly unboxed S6R, ran the calibration lua script, performed model setup via lua script. Stabilization mode works but ail2 does not move. After some head scratching i did the 'blue light' dance: bind channel 12 to any stick, move it up and down 3 times moderately fast (I'm not entirely sure if that's on off on off on off or just on off on), wait for the S6r to go blue and move all servos for a bit. Then move all sticks except throttle to the limits. After this procedure Ail2 performed normally.

Thanks for this insight I been trying to find why AIL2 wouldn’t work except when set to AUX1, all with no Stability, been at least four days on and off!

Much appreciated your insight about the Self Check (blue light dance)…. That fixed my AIL2 as well, with Stability!

I'm trying to calibrate a S8R receiver using the Lua script on my 12S. Receiver is bound to the model. When I execute, the receiver is placed in the level position. I hit enter and the receiver light blinks between green and yellow. The next step has the receiver position with the pins in the vertical position. I hit enter. The yellow light is on solid and the picture on the transmitter screen remains on. Nothing happens after I hit enter.
I then decided to try the calibration with my QX7. Worked great. Went through the entire calibration to the end.
I then tried it on X10 with the same results as on the 12S.
Am I missing something?
Did you geta reply to this issue or did everyone continue going off about other issues
