S6R and S8R configuration questions and concerns

Scott and Zipper thanks for the information.

To reiterate..it is an X10 Express running FrOS 2.0.06 05/07 with ISRM HW/SW at 1.1.0 / 2.1.6

From the best I can tell, to use the Stabilized RX, it has to be configured with the STK Tool, and that stabilization is ON by default. I popped in a R6 and the erratic behavior stopped. Working on setting up for the STK Tool....once I find a Windows laptop around the house.

I am extremely tech savvy having worked in IT for 30_ years.

If I opt for Open TX then what is the most stable version to start with ?
One step down from the latest and greatest. Only because its flaws have been identified and addressed in the latest and greatest revision.

Read the discription of the file on OpenTX's site to see which updates apply to your situation.

Wow -- if you're in I.T. you're going to love the power of OpenTX. I'm using 2.3.10 -- but there really has not been any instability since 2.3.5 -- just new features and minor tweaks.

Thanks. I need to pick up another SD-Card before I jump in. I have d/l'ed companion and the firmware.

I also used FreeLink successfully (perhaps) on a S6R...just need to plug it into the plane and see what happens. Let's just say that step one is turning OFF the stabilization and see if that resolves servos doing odd things. Then we go to adding in a real config. Or, I wait until OTX is installed and use LUA.

Hi Guys
I sure do like the S6R receivers.
I have them working well in 8 airplanes. now I just bought 3 more, and the problems begin.
I set them up just like the others. and when I put the first one in a plane. all went well until I tried to do the final leveling. when I flipped the switch on ch 12 3 times within 3 seconds. at this point I should see all servos cycle to confirm that It is leveled. not a quiver nothing. Yes it is on a 3 position switch. I tried many times. rechecked the mixes all is as the others. the flight stabilizer works perfect when I move the plane. it looks like it is ready to fly BUT!!! no twitching. I then tried a second receiver in the plane. It works perfect but no twitching.
have they changed something or what? I have spent hours rechecking every part of the setup, and found nothing different from the other 8 receivers has any body got any ideas.
Bill

I have been using the S6R/8 receivers for several years with no problems. But all of my installations utilize the “level” mounting type. I now want to install the receiver in a low wing plane using the “bottom” mounting type. when I write the configuration, it hangs up and does not finish writing. I am using the STK dongle and a WIN10 laptop. I can write the default configuration to the receiver, but if I change the mounting type to bottom, it gets stuck writing. i am using the original STK and configuration software from several years ago.

What a journey. After dumping FrOS for OTX the calibration concerns seems to be resolved. I am watching it closely. I have successfully setup several planes with Archer R6 and R8 receivers but having issues with the S6R. I have three of them and they will not Register. Actually they don't even appear at power-up on the radio. They are on the 2.1.7 firmware. Don't have a clue how to troubleshoot this. Thoughts anyone ??

Since you've been setting up those Archer Rx's, did you remember to select ACCST D16 for those S6R's? The fact that you're trying to 'Register' them suggests that you're trying to run them under ACCESS. ACCST has only 'Bind'.

Well that is new information to me. I hear you saying the ACCESS Archer SxR series has to be run using ACCST D16 in order to utilize Stabilization. Setting up FrSky gear is like finding a needle in a dark room wearing a blindfold while wearing welders gloves ! Geesh !

I have watched the ShondoRC videos which are quite helpful but still no success with ACCST Bind. I did learn I was applying power incorrectly to the R...yet lights were coming on. I trust I didn't blow up the RX somehow.

Watch out - FrSky's product naming (SxR vs. SRx) can cause confusion. Transpose those two characters and you're talking about a different product. The SxR line is ACCST, the corresponding Archer ACCESS stabilization models are SRx. Easy to make mistakes with that. So which one do you have: S6R or SR6?

As Konrad has pointed out, there is a reason why this thread is now up to 23 pages, probably the longest one on the forum. It has therefore become difficult to find the information you need, unless you can guess the appropriate key word to search with. When I started with the S8R's I also found Shondo to be the best source of setup information. Unfortunately he doesn't have a video for the SR8, if that is what you have. For SR8 videos look for 'Daniel Nadj', not as good as Shondo, but useful.

I am talking about the ACCESS SR6.

I am talking about the ACCESS SR6.
You said that "they don't even appear at power-up on the radio". But they do power up, i.e. at least the red LED turns on? (re. Wayne's note)
Since you can't communicate with it, how can you tell that 2.1.7 FW is loaded?
How far along the Registration & Binding sequence are you able to go?

I have an SR8, but assume that the 6 behaves similarly.

Yes, I get the red light but that is all. Firmware was updated by plugging the RX into the back of the TX.

The RX name does not appear during Register. This Reg/Bind process worked fine for my non-stablisd RXs.

OK, so apparently you know how these things work. I'm not aware of anything SR6-specific that would make them behave differently, and nothing obvious comes to mind. Time to call in the Aloft Cavalry...

Just curious: are you positive that you flashed the right 2.1.7? The accompanying Read Me file will state "Firmware for all Archer receiver models except RS". I just bricked another Rx with the wrong 2.1.7 so I have been 'sensitized' to this issue.

Not to send you on a wild FW goose chase, but if nothing else works you could try flashing 2.1.6, which is what I use on my SR8.

Curious as to what you mean by "bricked"? Dead? Trash-can-dead? Back to FrSky dead?

I had went and d/l'ed the 2.1.7 from the site to ensure it was clean then upgraded via the s.port. I am using OTX 2.3.11.

When I first purchased these SR6 and I tried to Register....the radio would see (and display) the RX but would not finish the registration. Then I upgraded everything to the current versions. This was under FrOS.

In this case (RX6R) "bricked" means that the red LED comes on but nothing else happens. Can't register, bind, reload or up/downgrade FW - just the pretty light. So, trash-can-dead. Aloft offered to look at it, but since recovery seems unlikely, I didn't want them to waste their time on it. For $25 I'll just get an R6 to replace it and move on.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I wonder if it makes sense for you to reload 2.1.7 on your SR6's again, now that you're operating in OTX. If I understand correctly, while still in FrOS you successfully loaded 2.1.7 but were unsuccessful with reg/bind, and then switched to OTX. I don't know if the OS change can make a difference, it's just one variable to eliminate.
Those stabilized Rx's are finicky. However, I never had Reg/Bind issues with either SxR (ACCST) or SRx (ACCESS) models. The typical and bigger challenge with them is setup and cal.
BTW, are your R6 and R8 Rx's also on 2.1.7?

I did reload 2.1.7 on my three SR6. Last night, I managed to register/bind/lua config the first one ! Woo ! Not sure if the reinstall fixed it. I want to check something else...I had noticed my LED high bay light would cause servos to jitter (when directly underneath). I want to run a couple scenarios to see if the light is causing interference. The success I had was with the light Off.
