RX8R Problem?

I was prepping a 30cc airframe for a maiden today when I found my brand new HiTec D-645MW servo on my throttle was dead. Checked all my connections and everything was fine. Pulled the servo out, replaced it with a brand new D-645MW. Double checked all my connections applied power and everything was fine for a couple of minutes. Pretty soon though I got the dreaded smoke and lost another servo. It's important to note that both servos were working for a short while.

The servo was connected to a 6" 22awg twisted servo extension that was connected to channel three of a brand new R8XR that I purchased from Aloft in November. Firmware was updated to the most recent version. I'm using a new 2 cell Li-Ion battery.

At this point I was wondering about the receiver, so I pulled it out and started bench testing it with a 2 cell LiPO. I was getting 7.55v on every channel. Didn't want to risk another wide voltage HiTec servo so I hooked up the receiver to a 2 cell LiFE battery (6.6v) and connected a cheapo servo to channel 3 using the same extension that was in the airframe. Kept it connected for about 5 minutes with no load on it and kept using the radio to move the servo to it's limits. No problems, no smoke.

So what to do?
  1. Do I have a servo problem? What are the chances I had two of them connected to the throttle go bad. All the other servos (same make/model) on the control surfaces are fine.
  2. Do I have a receiver problem? How can I test it?
Suggestions appreciated. Notice the crispy wires.

Well, you got me on that one. It is a digital servo, or appears to be. Should have no issues. Maybe a word with HiTec about the issue?
