Royal Models DG-808 - Build Log

I got my 1st Royal models (the ASW 3.5m) few years ago from a vendor in EU and fell in love with it. Then I found out that Aloft carried RM gliders (which at the time was easier for me to bring them down here) so I ordered 3 from them, this DG, the ASG and the full molded ASW 4m (yet to be maiden, but slope season is ending for this year)

Dang... The way I see it you're basically living the dream. That sounds amazing. Surf, fly, eat good food... Maybe I'll see you down there one day.

You got 1.5 out of 3 right :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: No surf in this area (I'm surrounded by mountains} and slope flying is only 3 months in the year.
AWesome! I have taken it out to try to maiden but weather didnt cooperate. When you have a minute would you mind sharing what CG and throws worked for you ? Thanks! Congrats on the maiden. Any videos?

She looks great!! The launch was nice and smooth. Can't wait to see Nates take to the air!

Hey all, Royal is discontinuing all of the foam core models, but don't worry too much, new fully molded examples will be coming. So if you want a foam core, better grab the few we have left in stock.

Hi Nate Iàm sorry I just jumped in like that. After I posted I felt a bit guilty the way I did it but I discovered this too late to offer any insights on the way I built it.
CG is as per instructions (may be slightly forward) and throws I haven't measured them but by experience is all I can give on rudder and ailerons (coupled with flaps) and as little as needed in elevator. I'll assemble it tomorrow and give you some numbers. that was the first launch and only needed some down trim the landing approach was like a container carrier smooth and steady (I also use the spoilers coupled with butterfly). Anyway I set my glider with three different rates individual for Ail, Elev and Rud so I can get the flight that suits me (I normally end up flying in high rates on Ail and Rud and minimum in Elev.

Also set my rudder servo in the front (kind of between the wing joiner tube and the canopy) with pull-pull. and even with that if I remember correctly I needed to add over 500gr of lead on the nose. Fly weight if I remember correctly is 5550gr.
I made a lighter wing joiner but for what I read here is not beneficial. We'll see on weak days but I'm afraid my season is over for this year. I'm off to UK next week and by the time I come back the wind might have left us.

Hi Nate I checked today my CG is at 80mm from LE (at the root) and it flies very stable like that. I'm not one that likes to push stability too much I rather enjoy a predictable model.
What I didn't check is my elevator trim (I know I had to add down trim but I didn't check how much). Since I'm leaving tomorrow I did just a quick check on CG.
I only flew this 808 once and my ASG 4m a couple of times but I have the feeling that this one flies better on the same lift even thought airfoils are the same and wing loads very close too.

On my ASW 3.5m I had to modify the decalage about 1° (elevator LE up) because the model was too slow and searching up all the time. Even with that the last flight I had to have the spoilers out during the whole flight to stop it climbing. That one flies like a hot air balloon :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
So I attached a pic of the front setup on mine.
Fernando

Hi guys, I´m been interested in Dg-808, noticed that it is required 800- 1200 g of nose weight, I follow building logs of Nate (nice build in you tube). 1) It is possible to install a nose motor instead of the power pod? 2) do you think that DG-808 perform well as thermal glider?

Yes, a nose motor would work well. Should be an OK thermal glider. I tend to think of the Royal models a little more as slope gliders, but there have been a LOT of folks that have built them for thermal hunting. Probably not going to be the lightest wing loading for a scale model, but also far from the heaviest.
