Royal Models DG-808 - Build Log

You could be right, it was something I was considering doing, sanding that area open more. Guess I should try that before I do anything else

The pic of the hinge area in the rudder shows that there is a burr and ‘stuff’ around the pin on the lower surface of the slot. If you use a sharp pointed scalpel, trim away the burr etc around the pin, then try the hinge from either side of the rudder rather than straight in from the front. If the bottom hinge area is the same, with a burr etc, remove with the scalpel.
If the hinge goes in from the sides and has free movement but binds again when starting to approach the straight out position, that means the slot is narrower at the rudder’s leading edge. Gently use a flat needle file on the underside of the upper part of the slot at the leading edge to open up the slot and make the slot faces parallel.
You will probably find that you don’t even have to go through the paint to free the hinges up. A gentle rub of the hinges themselves on some very fine wet n dry is also a good idea. Take your time…
Good luck!

second wing is mostly done, just need to put on servo covers.
Started working on the tail. I am gluing in some popsicle sticks as hard stops for the rudder inserts that go in later.

I assume you did a little sanding to the fiberglass before gluing that in? Most resins have some wax in them that needs to sanded back to get a good strong glue joint. I mention this mostly for others that might be following along.

or others that might be following along.
I believe it is some of the polyester resins that have the wax in their formulation. This is because the presence of oxygen inhibits the catalytic reaction. I don’t think most epoxies have this wax. But it is best to clean this wax prior to sanding. Also it is a good idea to sand the area to offer some mechanical teeth as there is little chemical bond between cured resin and new resins.

Key here is clean any wax before sanding.

Is the Royal fuse an epoxy glass fuse?

Posted as reference.

It looks like epoxy/fiberglass with some carbon in areas and they did peel ply on the inside. Nice and rough to start with. But light sand and clean up with some alcohol.

You might not want to sand a peel ply prep. These often leave tips that are a bit mushroomed adding more mechanical grip. But if sanded these will likely be broken/cut off by the sanding action.

Sorry I haven't been taking many pictures. I've just been in a hurry to get this done. In line with that. I glued the servos straight to the inside of the tail. The place that I positioned them and the hole that I made in the back reinforcement will allow me later to easily get a flat blade in there and cut them loose of the e6000 if something goes wrong. So this is more about time right now.

It is but i didnt get clear coverage or my clamping wasnt uniform. But mainly i have seen in other builds they come back over with vinyl so it looks more scale i think like the plexiglass goes under the canopy trim.
