Radio for student - good match for x20

I have an x20 on ethos and was wondering what an easy second radio would be for a student to connect to my in a trainer setup.

I know some of them have wireless now.

My understanding is nearly all of the FrSky radios now have this wireless trainer. I personally have not played with it. We also sell a module that adds this feature to older radios.

With this said - Just about any radio can be used as a student radio! Got an old Spektrum? It will work with the wired trainer.

I think all of the FrSky radios have a wired trainer port, and pretty sure most of the other brands have something similar. So just a matter of plugging the 2 together and then getting them both into the trainer modes. I know with OpenTX you could actually "calibrate" the student radio, I think Ethos has something along these lines too.

For a couple of bucks for the male to male trainer wire, this is a very simple and very functional way to use a wide range of existing transmitters.

As for trainer setups, there is some discussion on this forum of what we like to do here. Basically we "share" the plane with the student, and we act as a human stabilizer. We give them enough control to get into trouble, but we can overpower and correct anything they do. This works much better than giving them everything until it gets really bad and you suddenly take control back. With The shared approach we find students progress MUCH faster. I typically do not give them an throttle until they have shown some mastery of the basics of flight and can fly a decent pattern.

Hi
I do a lot of training with different Frsky radios.
I do no longer use the Para wireless system. It is based on Bluetooth. So you offen get a disconnect and it is annoying to get the radios connected again.
As Wayne mentioned start with the simple cable connection. If you want to go wireless you can use a receiver (bound to the students radio) as an input for the trainer radio.
Or if both are Frsky radios you could go for a FWTM (Frsky Wireless Trainer Module) what in fact is nothing else than a Frsky receiver integrated in a module).
But you can also use every other Radio + receiver and a PWM to PPM adapter to generate the PPM signal as input for the trainer jack.
Regards Alois

Hmm ok. Ill have to see if my xlite has a trainer port. I was hoping to use the para bluetooth as it seems super easy to setup. Guess i need to just buckle down and figure out the trainer port way.

It has a trainer port. :) Think all FrSky radios have for all of history. Pretty sure most all radios do have this except the really cheap toy grade stuff. Most use the audio plug. Might need to play around with the wired connections as the "standard" for those plugs is rather poor. I no longer recall what version FrSky likes, but it has been documented in the past. Ideally you want the "mono" plug, not stereo. But Stereo will work, the biggest issue is the placement of the contacts on the plugs. This is where the "standard" has varied and their are 2 or 3 popular styles of these now. :( They will all work, but some require some playing around to get the plug at just the right distance. Really dumb.
