Possible race planes for fun MOM series racing

I thought it might be a good idea to split this conversation off to its own topic as it could be available to other groups wanting to do something similar.

One model mentioned was the Spin:
For now I would suggest that all of the Blejzyk models should be considered unavailable due to supply issues.

A composite option would be the X-ray:
This is a very nice flying model and has proven to be a very robust model. The prototype survived mid airs, hitting a tree, and then crashing down out of the tree. Finally died in a major midair at Sunset that delaminated the wing. This plane offers all of the features folks are looking for, except the super low price. It would be a great trainer, it is very durable, and it responds well to everything you might want to try. We could do a special fiberglass layup and offer a little better price point for racers. The challenge may be getting enough to meet demand. This manufacturer currently is having a hard time keeping us supplied in models.

And then there is something like the Magnus that is a very nice 60" model. Several of the pilots may already have one of these:
This is an excellent choice and great price for the performance, but same challenge as the X-ray. May be more money than people want to spend, and availability has been spotty.

That more or less covers some of the lower cost already designed options that I currently stock.

Now we do have some time to push out a new design, or look at other options like an ODR (One Design Racer) compliant design. Soon you will be seeing some new EPP options from Aloft. We can easily focus in on something that might make a good racer. But I'm not sure an EPP frame really makes a good training vehicle for more advanced models. The weight distribution and challenges of the EPP wings kind of limit them IMHO for being what I'll say is an "advanced" model. But durable!! Heck yes. There are many good ODR designs out there already.

I am aware of at least one interesting composite model in the works that might be a good potential, but think the Magnus would be a better price point.

The Trix design might have some potential, for prototyping it is a mix of wood fuselage and printed wing, but the wing is printed for a little more durability than the current Slingshot. This will eventually be an EPS foam core wing with wood sheeting. For racing I'd suggest the speed wing with flaps and ailerons, this has not yet been shown. As a benefit I can offer a good price point since this is a model we manufacture at Aloft.

Curious what models you all think might fit the bill?
 
Some thoughts:

1. Cost matters to me. I would be reluctant to race a $500+ model at my current skill level. I only have $75 'non-recoverable' into the Slingshot (the electronics are mostly recoverable) and that makes for 100% stress-free fun. I literally bought extras (for myself and for 2 friends who will soon join the races), because at $75, it was a no-brainer.

2. I have zero experience fixing composite models. If the racing series also included some informal assistance in making repairs (maybe show up early for the race if you need help, or stay later) that would make me more comfortable putting a composite model into high-risk situations.

3. Selecting a model that serves as a proper training platform for more advanced racing is very appealing to me (I like to make progress and work towards more advanced planes)

4. It seems clear that for now, a 3D-printed model is the best balance of all the considerations (price, performance, accessibility). Maybe for next year, a glassed 3D-printed model (again, with some tutorials or at least a build thread for us less experienced builders) could potentially be a low-cost step up to higher performance. We could even take a hybrid approach - either glass the model yourself (follow the build thread) or pay a higher fee to get a glassed model from Aloft (if Wayne were willing to offer this).

5. Finally, is this model any good as a candidate for racing? https://alofthobbies.com/collections/fast/products/mini-q I've had my eye on this model for personal use for a while.
 
I debated the Mini Q due to the low price, sporty nature and good durability. But I don't know that a plank is a very good race plane, and really is only going to be able to teach people about setting up a plank. There is no other tuning that can be done other than ballast. In further reflection, it does have a good price point and it is a good model and I should be able to get them in enough qty.

Hi all,

Magnus is great as she flies well in modest wind and lift conditions. Can fly at slermal type slopes as well. Very forgiving to fly and land. Pretty robust if cockpit is reinforced a bit.

Can be ballasted up with wing ballast and optional fuse ballast tube. Goes very well in a blow with ballast but can get a little bit lively if turbulent compare with bigger models.

Cheap to buy and spares should be cheap too. Doesn't need super expensive servos either.

Of course I'm a big advocate of the ODRs. Super strong glass fuse with sheeted foam wings. Flyable in broad range of winds (important for having fun contests IMO) and very visible. Most crashes can be fixed by replacing the nylon wing bolts. But it takes time to build sheeted foam wings.

Magnus flies great and fast, but I'd need a second as I would never risk my Magnus. Downsides, cost and availability. Also some have been known to flick, especially in a race scenario.

Dream Flight foamies don't go quite as fast but what a hoot to race. That makes me think a foamy like Le Fish, Fox, or a beefed up Slope Monkey might strike a good balance.

I think the foamies are a good option but let me go out on a limb here. Wayne, how about asking Blejzk to make a special run of cross tail Mephistos or Serafins???
That gets you 1.9 meters of visibility, pre built and hinged sheeted foam wings, reasonably strong glass fuse (that could be beefed up a bit). Under $300 all up and ready to race.

At this time Blejzk is not an option. We have not been able to ship to the USA for a long time. This should not be an issue at this point in time, but it is. :(

We can easily design and manufacture an EPP kit, and have a couple in the works right now, but had not gone down the pylon racing avenue just yet. Again, I don't think this type of model will be able to teach any advanced racing skills, but will get all of the basic skills. Durability is unbeatable.

Magnus flick - Well, we get that with the current design, and honestly I think of this as a good teaching point as most any race plane should have this character, to me this means either the plane is very well designed, or very poorly designed. A very well designed race plane lets you get very close to the edge, and the pilots job is to tune to get as close to that edge as they can without crossing into badness. Working that wing to the limits is the goal when we don't have props to pull us around. So tuning becomes critical to get the most from the wing. Hope that makes sense. You push the Magnus too hard and yes, she will bite you, but just a tiny bit more nose weight or more than likely, less elevator throw and she is tame. I'd guess most Magnus out there fly in a rather nose heavy condition, especially the electric folks.
 
A Dream Flight Weasel has the following advantages:

  • Readily available
  • Parts availability
  • Durable
  • Priced right, fits everyone’s budget
  • Pilot skill level necessary to fly it … even the Camp-and-Fly group can handle it!
  • Building skill level … again ... even the Camp-and-Fly group can build it!
If you want to get new flyers interested you have to keep it simple and organized. You can always start an intermediate class down the road.

What about another 3D printed plane, where the STL's are also available for sale? This would allow sales of kits, as well as allowing those with printers to have fun with colors and different filaments. (I would love to print the Slingshot fuselage in PCTG. The only thing to survive on my previous slingshot, cartwheeling crash, was the slip-on nose cone, printed in PCTG, it got a small dent but no shattering) FYI, happy to share my settings (Bambu X1C oriented) for PCTG, I have spent a lot of time perfecting them, there are a few Idiosyncrasies to be mindful of no matter the printer.

Well I have too many ODRs to ignore so I'm sticking with them. And to round out my DF fleet I just ordered a Weasel. Felt kinda strange not having one. Racing it or not, I will have some fun with it.

And at WOW, smack dab in the middle of the USA, I plan to give it a shot in our Dream Flight racing class.

Not giving up on my Forza (when the new fuse arrives) or the Magnus's. I think the real problem is too many choices.
 
We once did pylon racing with Ahi’s at the SLOT and it was a hoot. Five planes in the air at one time and lots of contact, but they bounce! The only downside is you have to listen to a bunch of grown men giggling like school children. I’d be interested in a 3D printed 60 inch plane, or maybe something like a weighted Fish with a beefy spar.
 
If you really want to go balls to the wall fast, buy a Sessanta.

Expensive, yes, but you "Pays your money and takes your choice" As we Brits say.

You won't get Ferrari performance at a Ford price. But you also get a very stunning high-performance model that is designed for the slope.

Take a look at this video from CRG - this is a standard 'off the shelf' unmotorized glider with no ballast.
