Old 72 to new 2.4 upgrade

It should be possible. You will need an XHT module and then locate the PWM signal in the radio.

FrSKY DIY modules add the advantages of 2.4 to my beloved Airtronics VG6000 transmitters. (1995 vintage 72)
The reason five have been converted is that transmitter is limited to four models in memory and I have 20 models.
I get my used VG600s from E-Bay and RC Groups classifieds ads.

> One of these days I'm going to make you get a modern radio!

I'm pretty sure that's true, but it's got to be the right modern radio.
By that I mean that for me to be happy it's got to be simpler to set up and operate, not more complicated than what we used to use.

Just yesterday afternoon (at indoor flying) I held and was briefed on a Radiomaster ZORRO.
Then a little later I held and was briefed on a Radiomaster BOXER.
Both are modern wonders of ergonomics and electronics.

In the evening I started reading a little about the Edge TX OS.
https://edgetx.gitbook.io/edgetx-user-manual/

Soon as I got to the instructions for "long press" and "double tap the touch screen" I knew I would not be able to operate that OS.
If a device needs a long press and I forget that fact, I might as well be holding a clay brick or a smooth river stone.
The thing is, my brains have been leaking out of my ears much faster than I ever expected and these days I can remember stuff
from high school better than I can remember what I had for lunch yesterday. Or even WHERE I had lunch yesterday.

So, I have to pretty much rely on muscle memory to fly my planes.
The VG6000 is a six-channel computer radio which will fly a full house sailplane, a motor glider, and most any slope plane including deltas.
All this, AND IT HAS NO MENUS. Not just no nested menus, NO MENUS AT ALL.
Everything shows up on the LCD screen all at once, all the time.
I learned all it can do in 1995, and it has stuck with me.

So, Wayne, you'll let me know when modern radio design can match that, and then count me in for getting a modern radio.

Just a reminder, neither the Zorro or the Boxer have a touch screen :D Once you get a couple of models setup (with help from your friends) you can copy the model settings to a new model. 95% of what you need to do is only a 1 click. I know how thrilled you are with the your VG6000's but learning something new never hurts.

LOL - I know..

I would not suggest a Radiodisaster. LOL

If you like, I'll send you an Ethos radio to see if you like it or not. I suspect you will not.I just did this for one of my locals that flies old Hitec radios with FrSky RF. I showed him some things in the radio and told him to take it home and play with it, see it it grows on him. He did, but don't think he even turned it on. Much like you he is perfectly happy with that setup. Can't argue that.

With this said - Folks may want to stock up on XHT conversion modules and ACCST receivers while you can. FrSky has already run out the XJT modules. FrSky is phasing them out and there is not enough demand for me to keep them in production any longer. I do not think you will see a replacement for the XHT either. I think we can keep the X8R and X4R in production for a while.. (I have over 300 X4R in stock right now, that is a few years supply.)

Ethos is what I consider the very best programming we have ever seen on a radio, but it is different than you are used to. When we sold nothing but OpenTX radios (same thing as Edge TX) we had about a 20% return rate as they are rather difficult for some folks to adapt to. With Ethos our return rate is pretty much zero, it is that good.

As the previous poster stated, once you have your first model setup, you can pretty much copy it and use it for a base to build your next model off of. This is really handy for flapped models.

@Wayne , so speaking of Ethos, what is the cheapest radio option that will run it ?
I currently have two QX7's with ACCST

Steve, Very good point. That is a clear path.

Wayne, A fine offer. Thank you, but I;m afraid that your suspicion will turn out to be true.

Very, very good advice.

Hmmm... Which transmitter to select for the Sig wing on Topmodel fuselage flight test?
Something old? Something new?

PHOTO: My first transmitter, from 1988. Not on AM any more; it has an FrSKY 2.4 module installed.

LOL - That was my third transmitter. Wow, look at all of that trim on the rudder. Ahh the joys of mechanical trims.

On that Futaba transmitter I do miss having rates. And aileron to rudder mix. And aileron servo differential.
And V-tail or delta elevon mix. And end point adjustment. And a spoiler channel. And elevator compensation for spoiler deployment.
And it is highly convenient to have more than one model in a single transmitter.
<sigh>

Also have always relied on Airtronics Transmitters, starting with an SR2 and one ounce Rx and servos (glider), now have 13 or so computer Tx : Radiant, VG 6000, RD 6000, 8000, and Super 6000 (which work on both pos. and neg. shift ppm), and eight 2.4 from bottom end aero sport 5, RDS 8000, and a SD 10G with a manual that I cannot even begin to figure out. All the rest have been easy to adjust and glitch free. A hitec eclipse 7 has a dft module but is very awkward for many reasons, and have yet to install v8ht in anything (Not an electronics person). OT but I am pretty good with wood and have picture of garage I (80%) built with bandsaw and trees out back and nos cedar shakes.

Sorry I missed this question.

Right now the X18 is probably the cheapest radio that will run Ethos.. No, take that back, it will be the Horus X12 and X10 radios. Especially as you can buy those radios on the used market.

But what I will suggest is hold off a bit longer if you are on a budget as FrSky has the new X14 coming out.
x14.jpg

It looks like a pretty good replacement for the Old Taranis. It does not have the 900mhz, so the X18 for a few more bucks may still be the better value. Just depends on what receivers you would like to run in the future.

If you have easy access to an X10, or can get a really good price, then go for it. Otherwise I'll suggest the newer Tandem or Twin radio lines. Better in just about every way.

FrSky very nearly dropped development for the newest version of Ethos for the Horus radios. After some email campaigning they wisely decided to continue to invest in these older radios for now. Ethos has to be altered some to fit into these older radios, thus their reluctance. As Ethos continues to grow it will probably become more difficult to fit into these older radios.

The newer radios also have improved hardware and ergonomics that IMHO are well worth the price.

@Wayne, one question I have is there a JR bay on the new TX's? I still have a bunch of Spektrum, older FrSky, and SLT (Tactic) receivers. Plus a couple of Tiny Whoops on ELRS.

Never mind, Found the answer on RCG after looking further. Not a JR bay, but supports the Lite Modules
