ODR Designs

This is a longer term project, but I'd love to get some glider racing going again on the West Coast. Something cheap and easy to build/buy is key. The ODR (One Design Racing) rules fit the bill, and the have quite the history currently being raced in the Midwest so it makes sense to capitalize on that. I'd like to race at Lake Wilson, so we'll see what happens.

These are basically just doodles for now, I'm just exploring some concepts. I do like the low wing though, it has some advantages. It will be typical 60" style construction, glass fuse, sheeted foam wing and Balsa tails. With the weight minimum, I can build the fuse plenty beefy to take some abuse, and the wing will likely be hardwood sheeted with a Bass LE.

So what do you think? Does this sound like a bit of fun? Anyone interested in giving it a try?

For inspiration - a few ODR photos taken by Dave Garwood several years ago. His photos are what first got me up to Midwest Slope Challenge.
Hope you guys pursue this. ODR racing started in California would be cool if you brought it back.

Would be cool to be able to mix and match the fuse with a selection of wings and stabilizers.

Really looks like the early '80's stuff - Jerrry Arana and Rich Spicer etc.

Love 'em.

Here is one I did in the same Genre about 1990

I like the low flat fuselage concept. I'm not sold on the durability of a T tail for MOM racing. With the forward sweep you might want to push that wing back a bit further, or a bit less forward sweep. Sort of like the forward sweep of #2 with the V-tail of #1.

Just concepts at this point. If I end up going with a T tail I'd mold the vertical in. Ideally I'd design a fuse to allow a 2 piece plug in wing to try all that but the rules won't allow it. I really like the mix n match idea.

If you want an easy fuselage solution for your early builds, CLM Pro does sell a fuse that meets the rule parameters. (If you want to start with a top wing mount.) Super light at about 99 grams / 3.5 ounces. Made for a V tail.
I’ll be making a new ODR this winter and will use this fuse. But will put a block of balsa in the V notch and make a cross tail. Will cut out most of the wing saddle area for ballast access and servo wires. Will add some reinforcement in the nose area since some nose weight will be needed. And will probably add some carbon tow inside the wing saddle area.
About half of the ODR models flying at the Kansas race are EPP fuses like the Dusters in Dave’s photos.

Just throwing out a simple solution if it helps. Really interested to see what you come up with. Hoping you go full Red Alien mode on a fuse concept of you own : )

Good option, thank you. Yeah I do really want to do my own fuse, but I should play with planforms and sweep angles before committing.

Concept #2 looks airborne, Concept #1 is for durability and would be rather more fun to ODR or MOM. Be sure that tail volume, aspectR and schränkung fits your concept.
This type of soaring must be super fun. 've to try 👍

The Nova is one of my fav's, wished I still had one.
I had a "Lean Green Racing Machine". One of Chris Greengrass's designs. Like a Nova but about twice as big!

That developed into the "Sigma" MkI and MkII that we brought to the ISR in 1986. Wicked models.

Blimey Brits: L-R: Jim Hathaway, Me, Mark Passigham, David Woods, & Chris Greengrass.

Magical times.
