UPDATE: Los Banos is now open, so switching back to Los Banos. But we should do a Weldon event soon.
Hey all - Normally we would have the October FunFly at Los Banos on the third weekend of October, but with uncertainty if the slope will be open we started looking for a new plan. We needed something big, we needed a great slope, we needed something sort of central to Nor Cal and So Cal. Something well worth the drive!
WELDON!
Do you see the flying wing in the picture above? This is a big sky kind of a slope, pretty darn reliable lift. You can fly pretty much anything you want here, even big scale alpine gliders. Landings are not all that hard as you are able to point into the wind and land with very low ground speeds.
Now Weldon is known for something really special, and that is Dynamic Soaring, Weldon is a world class DS site and has many many records set there. This is a special site. If that wasn't enough, if you are interested in learning more about DS, we will have some expert guidance to assist you in your first laps, or if you already DS, some tips and tricks from the pros.
The DS side of the slope:
If you would like to fly both days, their are campsites in the general area, some AirBNB, and some lodges to pick from. The town nearby has some restaurant options, etc. Kern river flows into Isabella Lake.
Camping at Paradise Cove Campground:
There is no camping at the slope. We are going to park our vehicles at the bottom of the slope and 4x4 vehicles will haul you and your stuff up to the slope, no hiking required. You will be able to see your vehicle from the slope. There is no shade and no shitter on the slope. If you land out, not a big deal, usually a quick hike and you can pick up your plane. You will want to bring food and liquids for the day. Maybe we can run into town for an evening group meal like we do at Los Banos?
What planes to bring? Bring them all! Honestly I think you can fly about anything here. I have seen DLGs flown in the mornings when the lift is light. (I have seen DLGs DS'd) I have seen pretty large scale planes flown and I have seen all sorts of EPP and DS ships there. In some ways it is not unlike Banos in this regard.
Weather - October is always a bit unknown. Might be HOT, Might be COLD. Might be dry or wet. I suspect we will have dry mild temps this time of year. Lift starts mid morning and typically is good to amazing from then on. Lift on the front side is EVERYWHERE you would want to fly. You can fly way out there, way up high, you name it.
I'm sure I am forgetting things, so please ask any questions and I will do my best to answer.
Thanks all!
-Wayne
p.s. Maybe we will have some Sling Shots to let our So Cal folks pilot a bit to get a feel for our favorite little race plane.
p.p.s. Please let your buddies know! This is pretty short notice.
