Nor Cal Slopes - Got a spot?

Hey all - On a regular basis we get asked about Nor Cal slopes sites. Typically they are asking about sites near Sacramento or other inland locations and I really don't know of too many. I thought it might be handy to list some of the sites that are within ~150 miles of the Bay Area.

I'll start off with a few.

Tic Point is my favorite Bay Area site. You can find it here:

Some details - Typically people fly here on the weekends when weather permits. This is a legal glider site, but please respect any visitors as it does get some tourists and day hikers. The area is gorgeous. Landing can be a bit tricky, best to ask one of the locals to show you the ropes. Trick is to land on the grass, but do not go too far back or you will get stuck and land in the road or a tree. You should be able to land without going past the lawn area. Butterfly mixing is a great help. Most anything will fly here depending on the day. Lift is best when blowing straight in, but normal is a little northy. Fog can be monitored here:
If it is sunny and the ocean has texture or white caps, then get your butt to Tic! If the water is glassy, or you can't see the water for all of the fog, best to go somewhere else. If you don't see any water, just sand, then you better climb to higher ground, things are about to go bad.

Water Tank in San Rafael
You can find it here:
This is a gentle lift slope site near our old office. This is not an official site, but we never had any issues. This site is kind of cool as you can fly it most days that have any decent wind regardless of direction. Wind usually faces one of the slope directions. We have maidened several of our new designs here, you may recognize it from our Wanderer video. I have never seen the lift super strong here, but it can get pretty decent. There is a road to the houses, park down by the houses and walk up the dirt road. You will probably see people on little hikes and walking dogs while there. As always, treat it like a special place and don't ruin it for others.

Alpine - aka Ridgecrest
Can be found around this general area:

This is an intersting slope for a few reasons. First up, it is only flyable on the rare day when the wind is blowing out to the ocean. While the ocean side would be a wonderful slope for normal days, that side of the road is part of the National Seashore, and the Rangers will hunt you down with great efficiency. But the other side of the road is owned by the water utility and they have been very agreeable to letting us fly pure gliders from their lands. They do not allow powered flight.

When we have the reverse air, this can be a pretty good site. Normally it is pretty weak lift, but I have flown here on a darn good day. The other issue is fog.

Location of the pin on the map is just an estimate. If you are flying towards Alpine Lake, just about anywhere along that road that you want to try should be fine.

Well, I was hoping others would add some of their secret sites. Not like there are a lot of slope pilots anymore. :(
