New Typhoon MkII

I came across some old Typhoon parts from and old friend here on Saturday. Looking at the wings, RCRCM has not improved much over the years it seems.

But anyway - Take a look at the fuselage, a pretty poor knock off - yes even RCRCM gets copied if the model is popular enough - is superimposed on the new drawing along with a "genuine' wing and tailplane half. Red lines denote the orginal shapes.
-
On the fuse, the changes, strengthening, smoothing and rounding are pretty much apparent, but the overall look is still there - maybe better in fact. I'm surprised how accurate I got the vertical stab profile from photos. With the different front ends it can aso be a bottom loader or have the orginal fuselage ballast configuration for the glider plus the E version has a nice big battery compartment with a 38mm spinner diameter for the electrics. Added to that, the servos are now installable in the vertical stab on both versions.

The wings have changed shape a bit and lost some unneeded area, and so are now a slightly higher aspect ratio but keeping the same 2M span. They have also had some area re-distribution in the light of more recently acquired knowledge, plus of course the improved aerofoil section. Another new feature is the long 20mm x 10mm x 300mm ballast tube. Ailerons *will be a bit bigger and flaps a little bit smaller.

Hopefully the new wings and some nice new colour schemes will distinguish the older MKI version from the Toccata at a glance.

The horizontal stab is completely different and will now be far more effective, but it keeps the same tail area which is now about 12% over stable..

Hopefully the entire model will be lighter, stronger, faster and more aerobatic - or at least thats the plan.

*Probably - I'll decide that after test flying and I'll make sure the test pilots have a small saw and some mylar tape (!)

Cheers,

Doc.

James, how on earth are you going to make enough of these to fulfil the orders?
Actually its funny, Jonty - I only put a few details of the new models here and a couple of pics on facebook, but if I took "pre orders" (which I would never do), I'd have sold over 40. Then if I add the 'enthusistic replies' and emails, that would probably get to 60. And that's with very limited exposure for an unflown model. I have to say that many people who have responded are ex - or current - MKI Typhoon flyers, but maybe thats a good market too.:)

I doesn't look I'll have much trouble marketing this one - especially as its using a new wing technology which if it works, and I have no doubt that it's going to, plus very reasonable pricing will make it a very attractive proposition.;)

I'm really glad I decided to do this.

Cheers, and thanks for the encouragement.😊

Doc,
Make that 42 or 62! (Sounds a bit like an old Chicago song 😎).

Go for it! There isn’t an up to date 2m X tail model out there (other than the Toy X tail but that’s big money) for the sport sloper.
At an acceptable price, this is a winner, no question IMHO.

Exactly the same as my ideas when I designed the original actually. *Well made, reasonable looking, nice flying model, thats easy to install and and with a performance potential that you can grow with. AND at a reasonable price.

Unfortunately RCRCM made some *adjustments to the first requirement, but the model still did good service despite the somewhat lacking standards of construction and gave a lot of pople a lot of thrills over the years under its own name or as an ODM model.

Construction is something that will be well taken care of on the Toccata version.

Cheers,

Doc.

There’s been a small queue lined up for my Typhoon for a while now. It’s going to be a fun auction!
Christmas is going to be crap though, as I’ve tested positive tonight for the bug, dammit…

Yaaahhh - I had it and it was not real poblem, but you do feel a bit weird from time to time for a couple of weeks after you test negative.

I hope your Typhoon does well at auction! Going for a song?

Cheers,

Doc

Had the old girl out yesterday, having had a new set of servos and a complete re-wire. It was so much fun in 12-17mph, and so agile compared to my bigger, heavier models.
I’ve really got the hots for the Toccata now!

Who, What, Where, When, and how much? If you need to ask Why, you're on the wrong forum.
Inquiring minds need to know.

Who - Me, I think I want one even though I've never flown a Typhoon,
What models or options will be available (slope glider with a wide speed and fun range),
Where do we get a MkII Typhoon (Aloft?),
When will they be ready (this season, or not until the end of the year),
how much do you expect these will cost?

FInishing up a Magnus and I think it wants a bigger brother that can also fly in lighter winds as well as big air.

Hi JJ - more below:

Fair enough.

The original Typhoon is the largest selling Moulded 2M model of all time. Its a good allrounder, a good first mouldie and has taught meny people to fly.
What models or options will be available (slope glider with a wide speed and fun range),
You got it. It will be an improvement in all areas that needed it over the original Typhoon. Updated aerodynamics, small problems with the original fixed, maybe a little faster, a little more aerobatic, but most of all with a much improved construction, overall durability, plus better fit and finish.
Where do we get a MkII Typhoon (Aloft?),
I'm sure Aloft will stock them when I finally get them into production.
When will they be ready (this season, or not until the end of the year),
At best, not until the end of this year. Too many other models in the production line queue.
how much do you expect these will cost?
Average 2M model cost. Mine tend to cost a bit more than similar models, but I hope they are better designs, and made better too. Sine wave spars for example. Unmatched in torsional and compression rigidity.
FInishing up a Magnus and I think it wants a bigger brother that can also fly in lighter winds as well as big air
Well, it will be a good big brother for the "Magnus" which is an almost direct copy of the "Genesis" - a model I designed many years ago.

Hope that answers your questions. If you have others on any of my models - fire away!

Cheers,

Doc.

Thanks for the quick reply. Was hoping it would be ready sooner, but that would likely mean little to no prototype testing or refinement. So that means now I either need to be patient, or get something like this glider to go along with this glider. They would make a nice duo on a windy slope.

You could try a Forza from Aloft. Far more advanced than the Typhoon (I designed both) and a little lrger at 2.5M but a great flyer.
