My wife purchased a new Horus X10S for my birthday. I havent flown in quite a while and this new tx is quite different than my JR 9503 so bear with me on the questions.

New radio-new plane right?? I figured I would give gliders a try and purchased a used DLG with a V8R4-ii already installed. I thought that since it was a FrSky receiver that all would be good, however I can’t get it to bind. I first tried powering up the rx with the f/s button pressed but only got a solid red light with no bind. Then tried shorting ch1&2 signal pins while powering up. This got the flashing red light but still no bind. Horus is in D8 mode internal bind with no module installed on the back. What am I doing wrong? Currently running FrOs but from what I’ve read online, I’ll be better off going with the OpenTX and the learning curve of that operating system. Was looking for a guide online and that brought me here.

A couple more questions while I have your attention:

1. Is there any module I can buy that will let me link to my old planes (spectrum) or will I need to switch to new rx?
2. Are the bind ‘n fly planes out of the picture if the answer to #1 is no?
3. I was looking at a G-RX6 as a possible replacement rx since I thought Vario feedback would be handy for judging lift. Is this built in, or do I need another component?
4. The radio came with an R9M module and R9MM receiver but I see no way to connect servos to this. I see guys on YouTube soldering this to a board on their drones. Is this not practical for gliders/planes?

I’m planning on placing an order for a couple G-RX6 and/or G-RX8 receivers and the OpenTX manual from Aloft. Is there anything else that would be deemed essential?

Thanks in advance for any answers. Hopefully I’ll be in the air with this new setup soon!

look at this in detail

I spend a lot of time here

G-RX6 is a fantastic RX but do get a set of "Y" connectors as there is no separate plug in port for the battery. This is done to save space. I "Y" off of the #6 channel.

There are no legal modules for Spektrum DSMX. There is one for DSM2 if you can find it on Horizon's/Spectrum's website. But it costs more than most FrSky radios. Unless flying UMX stuff it is best to switch RX's to FrSky.

Is this a radio upgrade or did something happen to your Spektrum set up? I still have my Spektrum DX9 that I keep for my "toy airplanes" and use the FrSky for my more valued forms of entertainment.

If moving from Jr programing structure. The FrOS might be a little easier to grasp.

BTW: Good woman you have there.

OK, the receiver sheet you linked to appears to say that this receiver will work in D mode and I thought the Horus in D8 mode was this mode. However, the manual that you linked to (Thank You) states on the bottom of pg 13 that I need an extra module (DJT) for this and at the very bottom is a note that states this as well. Am I interpreting this correctly? Looking on the Aloft website I only see a JR compatible DJT module that I assume is made for JR radios and won't work on the back of the Horus.

Since the receiver seems to be dated and somewhat obsolete I'm going ahead with the purchase of the G-RX6 Varaio since that's the only one of the two rx that I originally was looking at with a few 2" Y connectors.

Good woman? Possibly. I've been wracking my brain trying to find out what she's done/wants. Only thing I can think of is that there will be more days I'm away from the house so I don't see what she brings home from a shopping trip. But yes, this was much better than the usual night out with dinner for "me".

And this is an additional radio. I thought I read that Horus could control the Spectrum stuff and I could just have a backup radio. The price of that module doesn’t justify it though.

I'm sorry I'm making an assumption that you are a USA customer of FrSky. If you are not a USA customer then some of the fruity brands might be legal in you area. But in the USA, Orange has not received the needed type certification from the FCC. I have found that it is best to keep my Spektrum stuff for my toys.

you don't need a Y connector for g-rx6 in a dlg. It's got 6 servo connectors. Use 4 for the servos, one for your battery. done.

If you go with that, you don't need anything else for altimiter/vario, it's all built in.

that receiver doesn't have pwm output, only sbus. normally you'd be wiring that to a flight controller with sbus input for all the channels.

you could use it a a glider in conjunction with sbus decoders like https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-sd1-sbus-converter.html or https://alofthobbies.com/frsky-sbus-decoder.html but typically for a glider you'd be using a receiver with some servo connectors (even if you do use sbus for some servos like in a wing to reduce the harnesses)

The Horus has a JR Style Module Bay (to expand you RF options).

Get the "Y" connector you will grow into it.

Did you get your horus to bind with the receiver ? your horus 10 will work with any of the frsky receivers , if you have not got the the system to work this is what you have to do first put your TX into internal bind and then power up your receiver using the bind button you have to select the receiver type in the bind in your TX it will come up and ask if the receiver has telemetry and how many channels oh and you have to select the version of the receiver when you bind it i have the Horus X10S and have not had any issue with using any frsky receivers hope this helps.

Yes, I’m in the USA - Southern Illinois. I didn’t see where you can fill out any more additional information. I’m doing this on my iPhone, so maybe I didn’t see where to put my location at. I have plans for a full house glider in the future so I bought a 4 pack of the y leads. Along with a few other items. Also bought the OpenTX guide to check that out as well.

No, I tried both ways to bind (pushing f/s button, and shorting out the pins). Horus is in D8 mode, internal bind.

Was the receiver ever bond to any TX and working at any time?
I had a little trouble binding the delta V8 to my Horus but i just kept hitting it and it finally connected try attaching a servo to the RX when you bind it and test the function with the TX at binding

I think it was boud to a Taranis but not 100% sure. I did have two servos on it to see if it was communicating but nothing happens other than the standard servo jump when power was applied. I’ll give it a few more tries and see if anything happens.

I received my new receivers in the mail and tried one more time to bind this before I switched it out. Did the procedure again and.....nothing. Grabbed the transmitter to check the display screen and as I moved it, the receiver changed state and I had a good bind. Maybe it noticed the new receivers on the table and figured it would get the boot if it didn’t straighten up and behave ?‍♂️. All is good now.

If the TX is to close it will swap the receiver this maybe your problem try moving it away check your db reading on the RF screen hope this helps
