Hey all, I think it is fair to say many of you enjoy the 1 meter Xray we sell. A clean and efficient model that can turn some blistering speeds without breaking the bank. But it gets a common request, can we offer a bigger version? So this is what we have started looking into.

Some basic goals are:
  • Good low price
  • Strong
  • Light
  • No Flutter!
  • Able to turn some impressive speeds without a super exotic setup
  • Able to handle a wide range of motors
  • Able to fit a lot of battery and the rest of the radio gear but also not fat
  • Very strong wing attachment (not just screws)

We would like it to be able to be an introductory model to higher airspeeds. Yet plenty for the speed nut too. This lead to some brainstorming and we were headed down the path of a 1 piece wing with a 2 meter span with flaps and a T-tail. When I shared this with a few interested parties they expressed interest in something smaller.

So here is a little poll to help us get some feedback on the size you all would be most interested in. I think the prices regardless of span will be better than the competition, but you will also be getting a much better airframe in most cases. (Many of the "go fast" models out there are a joke, and the better ones are pretty spendy.)

The biggest negative to the bigger sizes is the increase in costs. Airframe and shipping expenses will climb as the size goes up, but so does the potential speed. The wing will be a single piece unit, no joiners! The wings will have flaps and ailerons. It will not be a super high aspect ratio as we are looking for flying qualities and durability. Not a competition plane designed around class rules, this is going to be a fun sport model.

Thanks!

For possible contest entry, I suggest the wingspan to be less or equivalent to 1.4m, which is usually the max. wing span for pylon contests.

Another suggestion is to ask Jerry at TJIRC to PLEASE MAKE IT LIGHT. At least to the point of good ol' Jolt 2.
I realize for slopers there are benenfits to sturdy heavy models, but for those who don't have privilege of DS, light airframes are must!

Good work and best of luck!

The fastest electric I ever flew was the Simprop LIFT OFF XS.
I had both one piece and two piece wing versions at 1576 mm span.
Man-o-man flying that plane was heart stopping.
I think the XS is the little brother to a larger LIFT OFF,
so I voted for 1.5 and 1.8 meter spans.

As I said on the other forum, the Knife is well behaved plane that flies nice, I just wished it was a little bigger and threw in a comparison to the Reverb/ Mini Hawk that was a brilliant plane. A scaled up Knife would be great, and by having a canopy it opens up the options of using cheaper outrunners or quad motors.

I'd go for a 1.3- 1.4m plane (Reverb was 1320mm), but put the elevator servo in the tail to avoid using a pushrod down the boom and to leave more space behind the wing saddle for the RX and wiring. A 2 servo wing with a possible option of a 4 servo wing, a canopy at the front to allow an outrunner setup, a 38mm spinner allowing a 35mm outunner to be used without the wires catching on the can. A 4s 2200 high C pack should fit easily and leave enough room that your not struggling with wires, but by all means make it big enough for a 5s 1800/2200 pack if possible. People will always want a bigger battery area though...

Maybe there could be an option for a non canopied fuse, I just think that a canopy allows cheaper setups to be used which will appeal to more people.

E-Sessanta 60"?

Design spec pros:
  • Pretty model
  • 1-Piece wing with great torsional and compression rigidity
  • Very strong wing attachment - front lip like a DS set up. Can use a nylon "sacrificial" screw for safety - or tape.
  • Light
  • Strong
  • VERY Fast
  • No flutter
  • Great motor versatility.
  • Lots of batteries can be fitted.
Design spec Cons:
  • X-Tail
Cheers,

Doc.
