Neuron S 60 Amp ESC failure

I am pretty sure the esc is toast but I thought I would check if any one had any ideas of what I could check. I installed the ESC in a Night Walrus and had 4 or 5 successful flights. While doing an OTA update to ACCESS 2.8.1 of the installed SR6 receiver , the update failed at 60%. Examination showed that the receiver light was no longer on. Using a different ESC, the receiver OTA update completed successfully and the system works fine. I also discovered that merely connecting a battery to the Neuron 40 esc, with nothing else attached, causes the esc to get very hot. I am assuming that some internal component failed. I can't see anything to trouble shoot but I thought I would ask.
