Multiplex Mini Solius --> RC Conversion

lol i know.
Im about done working on new stuff for sunset. Going to start going thru all my planes to see how they are. Ill take that big wing down and re go thru all its dimensions and check cg again. And ill setup it up as all elevons instead of elevator/ailerons.

Is the surfer going to make it?

I got a couple of these from Aloft and just finished them. Really fun builds just trying out what works and what doesn't. Wayne's and Jarron"s both looked great so I did one of each. Followed the basic idea of how they did theirs. The first is just the normal T tail build. I wanted both to be able to pack down into my luggage for Sunset. I used a fiberglass spar in the bodies to straighten and carbon fiber flat spars in the wings. I used the electronics suggested on the Mini Solius page on Aloft site. X20 controller, R4 rx, Emax 9052 metal gear servos. AUW 100g. I went WAYYY overboard on these in terms of detail but I didn't have anything else to build and it was a fun few evenings working on them. I have at least one more planned that involves an ESC 😁

After seeing @thenated0g s Angel Wings Pug Twisty at Sunset 2022 I've really wanted one but they are always out of stock so when I saw Wayne's pitcheron version of the Solius I decided to do one. Same idea as the regular version. Moved the servo arms closer to the pivot to make it easier to move and get a bit more range on the deflection of the wings. Used the same carbon fiber tubes for the wing pivots but wanted them to come off so I glued some control rod into the ends of the internal carbon tube and used some collar locks at the ends of the external tubes to hold the wings on. Also put a super thin little washer on the rods in between the wings and body to make it smooth and give it consistent spacing on both sides.
At the tail I was hasty in cutting out the servo pocket and really put it in a bad place so I had to get creative with the linkage to get the AMT to have enough range. I know it's a pitcheron so it didn't need the tail to move but thought it would be cool to see if it's more aerobatic with it. Like the Madslide :devilish:

Sweet builds!! Going to borrow your canopy method. Or maybe Nate's..

You really have the pitch arms for the wings CLOSE to the spar. This may have some issues. If you look at mine the servo is flipped so the arm is much closer to the leading edge. I think your method will work, but you better give it some test flight first! The centering of the wing may be an issue.

Love the full flying elevator in the lower position. Gives the plane an very different look!

p.s. My wing is still removable. A magnet will hold them on, but like your solution too!!

So here is probably my last Solius mini for a while. Since @thenated0g got his DG-808 and decided to put a power pod on it, it got me thinking one of these minis would be cool with a power pod also. I used an Emax 1106 7500kv, Hobbywing 12a esc and a tattu 2s 300ma pack from Aloft. 115g AUW. The AMT gets like 45* up and down. Used an Emax ES9250md servo for the tail instead of the ES9052md. They are slightly smaller than the 9052. Definitely recommend them for small stuff like this. Hopefully get to take some of these out this weekend and see how they do.

Is anyone putting something down the rear of the fuse to keep it straight? Mike R is in our club and brought his in for Show & Tell, and mentioned how the tail would "self adjust" and he would have to bend it back to normal. So I was thinking if a little something might help prevent that...or if it is even necessary.

Did it fly?

Mine is basically done, just need to route antennas and mount canopy.

We went out this weekend but it was blowing around 20-25mph the whole time. Felt like Sunset last year! I had a few other things I wanted to fly including the minis, the weasel and maidening my new AHI so I didn't bring my FSST with me. It would probably been a perfect day for it. In the end we decided it wasn't the right day. We enjoyed the hike though!

I ran one down the bottom of 2 that I did because they were bent also. Used a 2mm fiberglass rod the length of the fuselage from the front landing bump to the back one. They work well as long as you keep the fuse straight until the foam glue sets. I taped it to the bench so it was straight and let it sit overnight. Have Mike R post some pictures of his build and post some of yours also! these have been a lot of fun just building, can't wait to get to fly them...
