More X20 firmware update questions

After I received my X20 last spring, I got pulled away from working with it until now.
After reading other firmware update threads, I gather that there are potentially other
pieces to update (SD & Flash & Radios) since my current version 1.0.5.
To get up to date, what files do I need (since 1.0.5) and where can I find them?
I picked up the X20-FCC (1.0.17) from Github.

Yep, you will need the X20-FCC (1.0.17). Simply unstuff that file and copy the firmware.bin to the root of the SD card on the radio. (I eject the SD card from the radio and pop it into my computer as this is faster for me.)
Then you can pop the SD card back into the radio (if you removed it) and simply power up the X20 with the "enter" button pressed. The enter button is the middle of the dial to the right of the screen. This will enter bootloader and automatically find that firmware.bin file on the SD card and update the firmware.
Power cycle and that step is done.

The SD card contents can be found here, I just copy the 2 folders on to the SD card replacing the old ones:

For the RF update can be downloaded from FrSky's downloads section for the X20:
Unzip that and copy to the firmware folder on the SD card (or the root).
Then power up the radio and click the SYS button or the gear icon, then click on "file manager" and navigate to the file you copied to the SD card. In this case, TD_2.1.15.frsk. Select the file and the little menu that pops up, select "flash internal module".

Should get you going. If you radio is really old, it may not have a bootloader yet, that requires another step.

Actually the 1.0.18 release just came out, and you actually need 3 items (not including the RF update). When you plug the radio into your PC there are two drives that should show up, and they call them the Flash drive and the SD drive, and they are described here: https://github.com/FrSkyRC/ETHOS-Feedback-Community/wiki/ETHOS-File-Storage-and-Firmware-Flashing .

From the link below you will want to pull Tandem_flash, Tandem_sd, and then the appropriate X20 file, and the contents of the Flash and SD downloads will go into the Flash and SD areas as described above.

As an FYI, the Flash file contains all the system icons, and though I haven't seen them change that often, it can cause issues if they are not up to date. Here is a sample of some of the items.

Thanks for the update!! I just did a .18 update yesterday and spotted the extra files. So much for the simple SD updates. :(

Would be nice if they would include some simple to follow instructions for the updating when you download the files. I'll see if I can get that to happen.

I had created an issue on their GitHub site about the lack of all files in all updates and they closed it stating it will all be easier when they get their updating app going. I cut them slack as it is a new OS and I do find them quite responsive to input.
Originally I had driver problems on my Windows machine and couldn't get the radio mounted, so I was pulling the card and just copying the SD contents, not even knowing there was a "flash" file. Then I reported a bug about missing graphics, and they asked if I had installed the flash files. I then hunted down a YouTube video that showed the install process and that was where I saw that there were 2 drives when you plugged in.
All this is why I make sure to mention it whenever someone posts something about updating that is missing that little nugget :)

Yep, I just chatted with Bertrand about including a clean PDF with instructions and he said there are a few out there. I suggested, great, but they are not included with the download. He reminded me the new update app will make all of this very easy. :) I'll sit tight and let him get that app built. I have to think it is probably pretty close with the way he is talking about it.

Hello. Can the system icons be changed? I want to use it for a ground vehicle and the aircraft icon at the bottom of the display is confusing.

Probably, but do not know the name of the file you would want to replace. You should be able to dig around all of the graphic files and eventually find it. Or you could ask on github where the developer spends some time answering questions.
