Mini Wanderer

getting there! - 1.jpeg

Will try to finish the wing this weekend if time permits. Looking really good. I do like our Flying Film.

Someone was asking how our film shrinks. Here is a picture of the canopy before shrinking, all edges tacked down. Compare to the finished canopy above.

I like to show the pre shrinking photos to give folks that are not comfortable covering that you do not need to get it super tight prior to shrinking. Just get it as tight as you can, and just tack all of the edges really well. Take your time and don't iron in any wrinkles as you tack. Last thing prior to shrinking is just iron all of your seams one more time. I used a little "Cover Grip" adhesive on the top of the rib where the red starts as it is a very small glue area there. Did not want it poppin free during the shrink. Then use a heat gun to smooth it all out. I consider myself a low skill covering person, but kind of enjoy the process. Picking the colors is the hard part.

The red was sort of a last minute addition. Had some random red film in our building supplies collection. Not sure what brand this stuff was but it did not behave well. I have micro wrinkles in the red and it let go in one corner. The rest of the model gave me no issues. Good enough..

Oh yeah, and we now have a nice smooth airfoil, no spar bumps! (Picture is from the leading edge towards the trailing edge.)

I have really enjoyed this project. It is a fun and very easy build. There is nothing complex here, but in the end you get a first rate model that should give years of great flights.

Many thanks to Red for the design and the entire Aloft Team coming together to make this another kit we can be proud of.

That looks really good Wayne. I like the painted frame with the transparent yellow covering. The painted frame with clear covering never looked good to me.

Ready for first flight. AUW is just about 6 oz. We used a 1S 800mah lipo and some woods metal in the nose block for CG. She is currently tuned for a nose heavy condition and will tune back, so AUW should be dropping.

AUW would be lower with lightweight films and not painting the wing and tail. Also, I elected to install the optional triangle stock that allows for maximum sanding. is a 5 ounce plane possible, Yes, I think so.

Lots of room for the radio gear.

We should get parts in today for our motor and folding prop, so we will start work on the electric version very soon.

Hope to sneak in some test flights at lunch today. Don't know conditions will be any good, but this should not need much.

I LOVE this plane!!

Looking very very nice!
I cant quite tell from the photo - is the covering film attached to the top of the rib at the polyhedral joint? Kinda looks like it was purposefully left unattached to provide a nice transition from inboard to outboard panel?
