Micro Sinbad

Konrad

Very Strong User
Starting to build this micro Sinbad. I acquired it here on Aloft's classified section. I need to be clear this is a used kit and was not made by Aloft Hobbies. I understand that Aloft is now manufacturing this kit under license. But this is not one of those kits where Aloft is the OEM.

It looks like someone tried to start the build as I find some 1/32" sheeting that has a lot of CA glue. I also see that I'm missing a sheet of laser cut parts.(I assume it is a copy of this sheet I point to as I'm missing a keel and a set of wing ribs). I also noticed that there are 2 sheets of plans. That are not of the same span. I assume that the OEM supplied a set of plans that where undersized (miss copied at FedEx or Kinko's) and that the original owner tried to build the wing to the miss sized plans. ( Actually with the way the kit is designed I don't think one needs full size plans to build the ship). As a result they gave up as the parts didn't size to the print.

It looks like I'll need to go to Aloft Hobbies and see it they will supply me the missing sheet.

While this looks to be a simple kit, I'd like to learn is there a manual I can get so there is something I can ignore while building this model?

Somethings I noticed. This is not just a scaled down copy of the Cleveland plan. It appears that the designer has added some major improvements to the original plan. First the micro Sinbad as a much larger (at scale) wing mounting platform. This adds a lot of stability to the wing fuselage junction. It also does away with a huge source of drag eliminating an expanding nozzle. (see Hoerner's writings). Second is that the stab mount is much stronger, stable than what was drawn on the original Sinbad plans. And last I love the very thin airfoil. This is a must at the low Reynold's numbers I expect this model to operate in.

Now the downside (for me) the micro Sinbad looks to be designed around the Spektrum RX/servo brick. I really don't want to use these. So I'll be reworking the radio set up fo use FrSky RX and discreet servos. Are there any instruction to do this?

Also since the micro Sinbad was designed in 2019 to use Solarfilm. And Solarfilm has gone out of business. This means that the covering this model was designed to use in no longer available. What are you all using as an iron on film to cover this light a class of model? And last where are you finding etched PTFE tubing to make a push rod Bowden tube?

Edit:
This kit does not have any etching other than Ailen face. I assume this is a prototype or an early production kit.

Bring your kit over and we will get you the parts you need. We also have the full size plans and instructions.

Maybe we should just get you a brand new kit, and if you have any issues with it, it will help us to improve our kit.

You can check out our new Flying Film when you are here.

Thank you Wayne. I hope to be by the shop tomorow sometime after lunch. Looking at my kit I don't think there will be any issues. Well, other than my modification away from the Spektrum Brick. I'd like to see what you have in mind for those of us with a more modern/conventional radio set up.

This time around I was thinking I'd do more of tab "A" in slot "B" review as these low cost model might be used by begineers. Sort of an Unoffical Build Manual. While this is a simple kit I really don't think these small micro models make great entry level models. I won't be going into my ussual engineering pro and con type review as this might just confuse the begineer. Besides there is little of the original design that I would think needs upgrading. (Have I said I like the thin wing)!

The ultralight park film on horizon is a similar weight and usually avaialable.

Interesting Brick. I wonder if it will work on ACCST v2.1.xx.

When Spektrum first came out with this style of brick I had all sorts of issue with servo reliability. Later the ultra micro linear servo got somewhat more reliable. But I still have a softspot for the rotary output servo.

We can show you some gear options tomorrow. We have micro receivers that talk ACCST V1 for FrSky, they are working on V2. I have one without linear servos and one with. Yep, we already had an issue with one of the linear servos on it. We also have 1.7 gram servos. The rub is that the servo can not plug into the receiver. Seems there is once again a wild west of non-standardization in the micro world. Go figure. Can discuss tomorrow.

It has always been the case with micro gear!

Well, well other than the 1/32 sheeting it looks like all the parts are there. I now count 14 ribs and the double center keel was really a keel doubler!

Off the top of my head....

You are missing pushrods, window, plans, manual, 1/64th ply control horns, magnets, washers, dowels and rubber bands and 1/8" stringers. in addition to the 1/32 sheeting. No need for pushrod tubes, the pushrods are stiff enough on their own. Parklite etc. works great, DO NOT use Ultracote or anything like it, you will destroy it.

Oh Yeah!!! I've been waiting for this to stock. I can finally cover my Angel wings SOAS that I got from @Red at sunset 2022.
Looks like a great selection of colors also. just ordered the Carbon fiber, flouro orange, and Gray. Under $10.00 each and only $30 shipping to Hawaii. Awesome value for me here. I got the orange to match the erupting volcano Mauna Loa that's about 30 miles from my house. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Thank you Red. Yes, I have the nice care package with the cut windshield (nice touch)! I think all I'm really missing are the stringers and manual.

I have built a lot of these micro RC type planes. Basicaly Guillow scale rubber band kits into R/C conversions. I plan to use many of the same techniques. I have a process thread HERE.

As to covering I'm thinking a 2ยต mylar with tissue covering.

Red, while I have you here I'd like your opinion about changing the wing hold down so something like this. For a host of reasons I don't like rubber band. Key is they tend to cut into the structure prior ro release. Oh, and I tend to forget to bring them with me to the flying feild!

Do you have any feedback on the keel durability. I have concerns looking at the wood grain. I'm thinking of using a laminated/cap strip keel.

I'm off to watch the videos.

Hey Konrad,

Well since i'm the guy who sold this kit to you. I was a little concerned there that i had lost the wind shield and other hard ware. As for the Ca glue i see in my classified post that i had glued a few parts back togeher that got broken for other reasons (my over excited son).

Anyway, glad to see the kit getting started. As for covering what about tissue? I think this kit would look great in tissue.

Hank

Konrad,

It only takes two rubber bands to hold it on. The finished airframe is so light (2 oz.) that I have not found there to be any issues with damaging the wing in less than perfect landings. There just isn't enough mass there. Same for the keel. The grain orientation is not ideal, and for anything heavier it would be different. But again, there just isn't enough energy on landing to cause issues. Do what you like, but adding unnecessary weight only takes away from performance.

The plane does look really nice tissue covered.

I have attached plans for you, the manual is too large. You can download it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1awLCuH2Ho6dXIwar_VVf55Vfrv4sh6Pc/view
