Mefisto build (BLEJZYK)

Yeah, not sure of the history of that one. Think the RC gang is about the only ones that use that name for that site.

There is a good history of surfers and RC slopers thanks to Hobie back in the day. He would hire some of the So Cal surfers to sell his Hobie Hawks, many of those surfers were excellent pilots and sold many planes after they demonstrated what they could do with them.

In So Cal we had a few guys that would surf in the morning, then come up and fly slope in the afternoons. It must have been a tough life. LOL

Since I didn't say it earlier, welcome to the forum! Always great to have another slope pilot here!

There is art in both of them.. No doubt. You are working with mother nature to create something that fills your senses. Sailing, Surfing & Gliding all share this. (along with some others)

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replys and the welcome!

Yes Konrad, Carving big waves, carving the snow and carving slopers in big wind is very similar, I can feel it in the air sloping just like surfing. (I cant surf anymore due to head injuries)

Wayne, I always brought my gliders up to Waddell with me when going up there to surf. Almost always guaranteed some flights after a surf..

Looks like Sunset may be flyable today. Packing up now :)

@Pricemo I'm always concerned when guys say they are going to maiden a ship and then we hear nothing.

How did the maiden go?
Hey Konrad,

Thanks for asking!

First flight was a handful, elevator trim down needed, lots. Next time I have to triple check everything. Quick flight, landed, fixed and the following three flights were great! It has a slight pull out in a dive and feels good so far.

I did get a quick video of first flight as there was a gentleman there that offered to video from my phone.

I do need to find out the wing screw size as I broke one when I was working on the wing seating. (I do have a few extra as its a single wing build.)

Also getting all the goodies now to build my Magnus!

Hello everyone,,
In case anyone is interested i have a nicely Built never Flown Ready to Fly Mefisto Sloper that will consider trading for a E-Glider.

Here is the link with pics. :

I have a Serafin arriving today. I've never done this type of build. This thread has been very helpful.

I plan to install a motor. Are motor pods still available at Aloft? I can't find them. Or do I just need to cut off the nose of the glider version? Will 2216 28mm OD motor fit? What would the weight of a light build so I can run Ecalc.?

I would like to do a one piece wing but I am not sure how that is best done. Is there a build thread that show how to do this?

I think you found the best thread for the build of the Mefisto/Serafin. (The Serafin is the same model without the up turned tips).

If there is anything you still have questions about please ask. The key points are that this is a stressed skin wing. So you will want to add fiberglass across the center line joint. Also take note of how the skin sheeting is undercut to allow an epoxy fillet.

Motor pods are a bad idea, as they rob so much power/performance and limit the selection of prop sizes. I love the motor in the nose. What are you looking for from the motor? I sustainer motor to bring the plane back up the slope cliff? Or a motor to get the model to thermal height (winch in the nose)?

P.S.
I think there is or was an option to get an electric nose for this fuselage.

Hi Konrad

Yeah, I meant winch in the nose. I just saw electric noses on on an old forum post but I looked on the Aloft site and I can't find them now. If not I will just cut off the nose to suit the 32 mm CN motor mount I bought with the kit. I may just do that anyway. A quick look suggests Ecalc suggests a 2212 980 kV motor would be good with a 10 6 prop or thereabouts. Weight 47 to 57 g depending on model and spec accuracy.

I read through this thread and it is very helpful. For the one piece wing do you put the hold down blocks in each side so that the are glued together (small holes for bonding on mating surfaces) and then drill down through glue joints for the two attachment bolts, skipping the thin ply root ribs? I understand the the point a about pushing back the foam a bit around the veneer. Does CF tube/sleeve do anything or can it be omitted? What would be a good dihedral for a thermal ship (no slopes around here) expressed the distance one tip would be lifted off the building board when the other wing half is flat on the table? What weight and thickness fiberglass. Epoxy: is Bob Smith 30 min OK for bonding? Is Zap laminating better for fiberglass? I have these. Or should I look for something else. I have also had epoxy failure to cure as you describe. Thanks for any additional info? Kit just arrived. Very nice.

At this time we do not have any of the electric noses for your plane. We do try to keep them in stock normally.
