Magnus Sloper with Servorahmen IDS

2MUCH2DO

Strong User
I so rarely get to work on brand new moulded (crunchy) airplanes (I primarily buy used), and I'm pretty proud of how this one turned out. Additionally I was asked if I would go to all of this trouble again if I had it to do over. With those combined I thought that I would share. Thanks to both @Wayne and @Konrad for the advice when I was venting frustration.

For starters my equipment is:
  • 4x KST A08H
  • 1x KST A08
  • 4x Servorahmen KST X08 Mono IDS
  • 2000maH 18500 battery
  • Archer R6 Receiver

During the process of figuring out how to make this system work in the magnus I actually gave up about 3 times. But each time I did I re-read the first 3 pages of the magnus thread and decided that the top drive method was just as much work, so I kept at trying to figure it out.

How I made it work, by the 4th one it was pretty easy to install
  1. Rod lengths are 49mm, I shortened this using an end-mill with a center drill and a drill bit, but a small drill-press would do it.
    1. You want to make sure the hole is centered though
    2. I did a lot of pulling and twisting on a test arm before I decided this would be OK
  2. The control rods needed to be installed backwards and upside down. This was because if I had not done this I would have had to carve out nearly as much of the top skin as the top drive install
  3. The spoons needed to be installed in the lower profile orientation for the same reason, the wing is so thing and the angle between the barrel and spoon is so shallow that otherwise the rod would have bound against the top skin and it would have had to have been relieved
  4. The smallest diameter barrel was needed for reason 2, and 3, and for the general wing thinness.

Why I would do it again
  1. It seems to be actually less surgery on the wing than the top drive, certainly to the top of the wing
  2. There is no play, I really like that, I've grown to really enjoy that from F3F
  3. There is outer support on the A08 Servos, the X08 did tend to develop slope over time, A08s are supposed to be better, but the outer support should help
  4. It looks so cool!

Additionally, I broke out my little laser and made a custom servo tray for my elevator servo. I secretly wish I had a stash of the MPJet carbon rod threaded ends, maybe I'll try to get some to add after. It should come out to about 895g (34.7oz) if I balanced at 76mm, we will see, I think I will target 78mm for the first throw, a plaster mould for this purpose is currently in the hotbox drying out. I'll probably take a silicone mould off of the result just because a couple of friends are already interested in these and that would make is supper easy for me to cast them a nose weight.

I did, I believe there is still a clevis on the control horn with Jono's method which still has to pass through to top skin. He does have some 3rd bearing designs on practical rc which would take care of that.

No that is the beauty of the threaded push rod threading directly into the servo arm. I use this in all my Redshift ships. I'll see if I can find a link.

Wait I think you are correct. But on the servo end it really makes for a much shorter servo arm.

Great to hear.

If it makes you feel any better, I have had a Magnus on my build Que for too long. I screwed up the top drive and am not looking forward t fixing it. I rushed the build a bit and now have binding/clearance issues. I wish I had gone with my gut and done the IDS.

I mean, it makes me feel bummed for you. I'm pretty dang happy with how this turned out. Ironically I want to re-do my elevator pushrod with some awesome aluminum tapered threaded inserts from MP Jet.

2MUCH2DO,

Congrats on the flight!

I'm sitting here with mine. Still waiting on a few parts etc. and the guts assemble my first glass slipper.

I have read the full Magnus thread a few times, and was paying close attention to your problems. Glad it worked out for you!

I did buy the carbon set, and hoping they may be a little more forgiving on the ail/flap install. (this I doubt)

Im sure Ill be back for help! lol..

P.S.

The Black and White looks great!

Could you explain what you mean by shortening the 49mm control rods please?

The pushrod legnths on the servorhamen kit were too long. The only way to make them work was to shorten them.
