Magnus Build thread - TJIRC

Hi - Just a quick question - what range of wind speeds does the Magnus fly in? The reason I ask is because when I go to the slope if the wind is less than 15/20 km/h I can't maintain lift, I ultimately land at the bottom of the hill, it's a slow fly down so to speak. Also even when I have flown in strong wing 25-30km/h it's not moving half as fast as I see in the videos - is this because I'm not using ballast? Sorry if the questions are a little basic but if I don't ask I'll never learn :)

Cheers Mike

Mike - No easy answer on this as all slopes are a little different. 15/20 km/h on some slopes will put a lot of energy into a model and others will not. So this really is based on the site.

With this Said I would say the Magnus without ballast can fly in moderate lift just fine. It is more fun with more lift!

So you may just be at a weak slope, or you may not have the CG dialed in. Maybe a combo of both? As the CG comes back, typically gliders will fly more efficiently and maintain their energy much better. With a nose heavy plane, it steals energy from the model to keep that nose lifted up via the elevator. But if you push the CG back to far it will get unstable. There is a fine line.

Hope this helps.

Dumb question: is there a grub screw or something that locks the wings in place once they've been put on? I don't see anything like that in the various photos online.

Thanks!

For normal flights with the Magnus you should not need anything. But many people will put a little tape on the wing to fuselage joint.

For DS flights, or very windy or turbulent conditions, tape is recommended. Or if you ever notice the wing joint opening up on your model in flight.

They may well open up a bit on landing, this is normal and good. When in doubt, tape it up.

Thanks. All my foamies (powered or gliders) have always had a screw, latch, or some sort of snap/lock system on the wings. Leaving them unsecured is new to me . Obviously it seems to work just fine as you all have been flying them for years haha.

Hi Mike, a few questions I hope you can help out with.

How high Is your slope, and does it have a shallow or steep angle?

As Wayne said, a forward CG position becomes a real negative factor affecting performance in light lift conditions but slightly less so in really good lifty conditions. Where’s yours?

Do you have Climb (camber) and Reflex flight modes set up and working?

Cheers
Jonty

It's funny you mentioned something. Some of the guys that bought magnus's at the point of the mountain Draper Utah Don't like to fly them because they're not fast enough and they sink! I just told them I was going to buy one and teach them how to fly it. That's exactly what I did! Now if I can only find parts for the dam thing! 🤦🏼‍♂️ What size fuselage harness do I need? 2 cm or 3 cm? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Are these small enough to fit in the Magnus?

Is the flap control horn the one with a slightly greater angle ("A" in attached photos)?

Yup, horn A is the flap horn. The clevis pickup hole is thus forward of the flap hinge line, giving good down flap throw, as well as clearance for the linkage as down throw increases.

Cheers

New Guy here, this is all great info, I managed to install one horn on the wing and it is the correct one! :-) I do need help with a Kst 08 servo though , the servos I have only are 16/17 spline output , am I missing something? been trying to find metal arms but everything comes up 23 tooth.

We have been getting reports of possible new splines on the KST servos. We just added some new metal arms to our site from TLS, and they list the X06 as the same as the X08, but the A08 has a different spline. Here is the servo arm, if it does not fit your servo, we will send you a return label and get you a full refund.
or with the fancy clevis:

I am starting to think that KST has changed splines once again.. Also, we had a customer that bought some KST from another supplier and they appear to be VERY old units. That's fun.

@Wayne My TLS LDS kits just showed up. They do not fit on the three X08s I have here. I have some X08+s in the mail, will see how that goes on Monday. I'm not sure if any came from you, but I've gotten them from Amass and Esprite and they all seem to be the same stock.

Of note: the X08 and A08 servo arms I have all fit each other (A08 fits on X08, etc.). Also, if you look at the spec sheets for the two, it appears they use the exact same 15T splines.

Tomas may need to update his production specs.

Right , TLS is really a cleaver setup. I see why the output is smaller . I got these from the Big A wanted to buy from you but out of stock. So the x08 and x06 may be VERY old? I did notice the V6.0 on the box is taped on!
I counted the splines more than a few times , always came up with 16/17 , if the TLS units are 15 t hum ! Thanks for the help

I just received an order for 08 frames and arms. The frames are for the 08's, but the servo arms fit the 06 but not the 08a's. This is not good. .Hi Wayne😅

Update: Just checked TLS site. It indicates the the current horns won't fit the 08a's, but will fit the X series. Aloft indicates the X series. I should pay more attention, but I'm laying the blame on KST for changing the outputs in the same series of servos.🤬
