Hobie Hawk Restoration

@Tahoed

That's a nice yellow! I think it stll needs the 'Hawk' Logo on the tails. Here is a small copy (I do not have bigger..)
Like this?? 🤔 :p

Yes, less than half the weight but also 1/2 to 1/3 the wing area.

Wait, What?
The Hobie has 590 sq.in. and the Windfree has 560 sq.in.

When I was a body & fender man I would remove all the badges and fill in the tail gates!
Now I haven’t painted a car since 1982 nor have I built a car since 1989. But I still remove all dealer stickers or badges that won’t damage the car paint.

Looking at the way the 3 pointed star car is built and the maintenance records, I can’t understand the prestige some place on it. German prestige and engineering my a$$, just look at the joke that is the Volkswagen, despicable management! Marketing sucks! But like they say a fool and his money are easily parted.

Well, I suppose that the hobbie hawk also fall under the "It doesn't look like anything else so it doesn't need a badge" catagory.

You'll have to let me know if anybody asks you how you painted your radian red when you're at the slope.

Konrad doesn’t post on here any more. I believe he patched the wings. I’ll ask him and let you know.

I talked to Konrad,

He did patch the wings, and he's fixed the Rudder and installed the charging port. He is currently posting on the Stick and Tissue Forum if you want to follow his builds. He's been doing a lot of work on his Sparky.

Konrad told me that he has finished the major work on the Hobie Hawk and is now in the test flight trim stage of development. He says that has has moved the cg back from 2.5" to 3.0" and maybe can go back a little more as he's still carrying a bit of up trim. In one of the pics you can see all the nose wight he removed and the little bit of solder he's added to the tail to push the cg back. He likes how it flies with the tail kink he added which keeps the flight profile of the hobie but allows for a bigger speed range. He seems really happy with how this one flies compared to others he's had stick time on.

I personally think it looks great.

He brought it by the shop and he has that model better than new. Very good looking and nice and straight. The wing is in really great shape now.

Konrad thinks it might be the lightest Hawk he has seen, and I'll agree, it feels much lighter than stock. He told me he had sanded down the tail boom a fair amount as they are rather over built anyhow. I remember doing the same on one I was rebuilding years ago, there is no fear sanding away at that glass tube.

Here are some of the dorsal references attached. BTW, I have a brand new unpainted fuse and the dorsal is not ABS, it's poly-carbonate. The image with the dorsal split into different components are the prototypes made by Tony. If you need, I also have the dorsal .stl files that I got from the rcgroups....

The R/S radio from the early 1970's is for the Hawks I'm fixing, but with slight change in frequency ?
Am so looking for a HH dorsal fin assy, if you have one you’ll sell contact me please!!!, avi8torboi@ yahoo. com, thx!!

I was just talking to Konrad and he wanted to clarify the weight. He said that his current AUW is 1.2 KG and the old Hobbie spec says 1.02 KG he’s surprised how heavy his is.

He said he’s tuning the CG even more and the HH is getting better and better. It’s grooving in the turns and there is no sign of that Hobbie wiggle.
