just got my first taranis acct (been using a dft in eclipse). came with two stock batteries. first was dead. second one, the screen lit up with OPEN TX made some sounds with a blank screen then nothing. so i am guessing it needs charging and i do have charge connectors for jr/air or futaba. would either be the correct connector?

Taranis had a dedicated charge brick with a round plug that went into the side of the radio. The radio itself contained the charge circuit.

With this said, what kind of battery do you have in the Taranis? Many people upgraded them to a Lipo pack, if that is the case, you can not use the built in charger! You will want to pull the battery out and charge it with a seperate lipo charger.

Chances are you have the green NiHM packs as I would suspect they would be VERY dead at this point if the radio had not been used for a year or more. This is typical for NiHM packs, they like to be used, not stored. If this is the case, you will probably need to get a replacement.

Wayne, it has two original type 7.2 battery packs. the seller claimed radio worked after charging. my first task is to make a life pack, of which i have made a half dozen and use the connectors on the junk batteries. i could charge the battery in the radio if i knew the tx connector and hooked up the balance connector as usual or take the battery out and include a more common connector like jr/fut. so do you sell the male and female of those old 7.2 batteries?

You can't charge the Taranis radio with a "charger" as they have a built-in charge circuit, and a normal charger will blow that up right quick. I did that years ago and ended up rewiring the charge port to connect directly to the battery so I could continue to use my regular charger.

Yes, you must use a smart charger for the LiFe battery pack you are going to make. As I recall the Tranis uses a normal 2S balance port for the connector:
You probably have some of these in your collection, or recycle one from the old 7.2 pack.

When it is time to charge, just pull the battery cover and connect to a smart charger.

When you get the transmitter powered up, check the voltages the radio is reading, if they are off from what your volt meter shows, there is a calibration in the radio menus. Then go adjust the low voltage warnings in OpenTX.

well got a life rx pack i had on hand and the balance connector plugs right in and hope to find A123 2 cell pack somewhere that will give plenty of capacity. meanwhile i turned on the tx and though i can scroll to some setup for a plane i cannot get very far and have been unable to change a single thing. i obviously need an instruction tutorial

We may be releasing the Taranis OpenTX manual for free. We are checking with the author. :) It is the best resource.

I'd suggest 3 cells. The radio will handle a 3 cell Lipo just fine, so 3 cells of LiFe will not be an issue at all.

got the radio powered up with a rx life i assembled and the tx does power up and shows 6.6v which is correct. and i feel pretty stupid that the molex connector on the triangular batteries is the same (balance) connector i,ve used on dozens of lipo packs i assembled. i don,t seems to get very far in accessing much of a menu on the taranis. obviously i need to watch a tutorial for the very basics. radio came with two loose switches one with nut loose in the case and three junk batteries so i am hoping i did not purchase poorly from the "group". i have been using 3 cell life on my airtronics so i have several and as i am attempting to resume flying rc now that most major projects have been completed and 600mah is plenty of capacity for me. just finished an oak and maple pergola on a red oak deck that was completely bandsawn by me from trees out back.

The Taranis is going to be a little different than the radio you are used to.. It is very different. Push and HOLD on the MENU to get into the system settings. A short push of the menu button gets you into the model setup, and from there use the page button to cycle through the screens. Maybe start with checking the radio settings and not a bad idea to run a stick calibration.

slow going. the rudder trim sometimes changes values. other screens i cannot change anything
