Hanger 9 1/5th scale Mustang.

So, I finally got aggrivated enough with Tower repeatedly pushing back availability. Graves rc had three kits. Ordered 1. Ordered the main gear wheels/tires direct from robart. Its on its way. Fedex, please be kind.

Ok, guys.

Here is what I plan to do with the plane. What it should look like all done.

Will Faord's Swamp Fox, 357th Fighter Group. The same outfit as Chuck Yeagar, and Bud Anderson. The difference from out of the box to this..decals (Callie-Graphix) and the rudder. Konrad, this is where the bit of discussion we had about removing ultrakote comes in. I have to change the rudder color from Red, to Cub Yellow. After that, its all decals. I handed that part off to Callie-Graphix. She has been swamped so I hope to have them by the end of the build.

So, as some of you know, I've been puzzled over how I was going to cg this "monster" of a plane. I've had a lot of good suggestions, from home built stuff to commercially available kits for balancers.

Tonight, I made the final decision, and it boiled down to 2 things.
1. The future: with the wife wanting to fly rc, the future holds 3 more planes, minimum all different sizes.
2. Space: mainly storing whatever I used. After a good month of reading, videos, etc, checking out all the different methods, I had to go with what would simply stash in a drawer or a case.

I pulled the trigger on the Xicoy. I hated to do it as the xicoy was almost 400 bucks, but, in the end, it is an investment and it will make making minute adjustments much easier, no matter the plane.

Also ordered the nav and marker light kit (optional) from mytrickrc.com.

Wayne, they are in your neck of the woods. :)
Pretty much all they do are lighting for large rc aircraft...

I hate fedex. Got notification delivery attempted. No attempt made. Called fedex and ripped them a new one. If they cost me 300 bucks more in shipping I'm going to strangle somebody.

Test fitting continues. Wings are tightbut fit. No alighnment issues. Just some light sanding at the ribs of the wing to get them going on a bit easier. Had an issue on right center wing. Tube would not go in at all becaause of a slight burr in the wood. Light filing with a wood file sorted that quickly. Getting the wings back off requires a wedge right now. Gotta sort that some.
Just handling the pilot seat caused to to crack, its super thin and, in my opinion, junk. Sorting that with a cockpit kit for this plane from JP warbirds.
He still has to paint it, but its almost done. Each one is made to order.

More pictures of parts test fitting. The stabs. For a quick idea of size I grabbed my cigs. She is a big lady...makes the plane rack look small. There is a small cpver just aft of firewall for ignition, battery, telemetry box so those won't be exposed to engine heat. I am going to have to modify the firewall some to clear the carb. I had two options, a. put the stock intake back on and then have to cut the cowl, or b. Leave the vogelsang on and clearance the firewall..hanging the carb out is not a good option.
But, clearancing the firewall creates a new issue. Theres a gaping hole in the firewall center for other engines and their mounting. I'm going to have to partially seal up that hole cut at the factory for 1 or use metal mounting plate that came with the engine. Leaning towards that, but I'm going to have to notch the plate at one corner as well which means a 5 bolt pattern instead of 4 (either side of notch for carb).
Then its going to be deciding how much I can live with or not. If I use the included stondoffs that came with the plane the gap between spinner back plate and cowl will be somewhere around 1/4 to 3/8 inch. I'm mulling this over deciding how best to proceed.

You can see in the picture, the major hurdle I'm going tp have to overcome.

Engine mounting. Its going to be a bear. They have apparently "updated" the firewall/engine box some. The huge, gaping, funky shaped opening is going to actually be a problem. I'm going to have to fill it some, then reinforce with some cf plate, whchi, I have sone, bur am going to have to order more from Wayne, along with some birch plywood for filling it. Once that is done, the corner of the box, closest in picture is going to have to be cut out, 1 and a half inch x 1 and three quarter to clear the carb and intake.

The carb/intake may also cause an issue with the exhaust. It may end up just being a straight pipe/flex header for a bit until I can either get the tools to fabricate a muffler or find one to fit.

The stand offs in the picture came wirh the plane. Not sure but I think they are too long. I have 20 mm stand offs coming from Mcmaster Carr.

Wayne, I'll be ordering, probably, 2 more cf plates and probably 3 sheets of ply from you fir the firewall modification as well as a cf rod 1/8 diameter to "pin" the modified section as the modification will remove one of the firewall tabs. Be this friday.

The "cart" is filling up.

So, I'm out on the road. I didn't get to spend much time on the mustang on my brief overnight fixxing fedex's snafu. I mainly got the rudder color changed, did some test fitting, and started trying to get the sliding canopy rails sanded per step 1 to get it to slide properly.

The one issue I have is the pin at the back of the canopy frame does not want to seat and slide in the built in internal track. I've been told theres a lip that has to be sanded away. I'm going to have to figure out how to do that.

I'm thinking a small allen wrench wrapped in sandpaper...

JP warbirds (Jiri) just finished this little cockpit update in CAD. Hes sending one along. Goes on the left side of cockpit near pilot's elbow. I would imagine many used it as an elbow rest on long escort missions.

Been a busy couple of days, all the control horns are in place, Servos in place in elevators, ailerons, flaps.
Wing tubes sanded and fitting better but still snug.
I've begun making the pieces to plug the giant hole in the firewall in preparation for notching it for the carburetor. I'm cutting about 1/8th of the firewall out for that so firewall is being reinforced with carbon fiber plate, cf dowel pinning, and the new structure being put back will be laminated in cf mat/epoxy. The flap control horns had to be notched for the hinge wire tube. As it rotates with the flap, the control horn was epoxied to it as well as the wood rib in the flap. I can pick up the whole fuselage holding those horns with the center wing attached. Despite a good chunk of the tab being cut away its very strong.

I'll need to order longer control arms for the flap servos as the included horns only give about 30 degrees of flap.
Already ordered better ones for the elevators. Its going on midnight now so tapping out till tomorrow.

I'm ordering 2 50mm length servo arms as well as servo arms for ailerons and elevators from Wayne.

As you can see in this photo, the servo arms that came with the servos are not long enough at all. She'll need more than 30 degrees flaps.
